Stock tires seem to be wearing very fast.

Hey guys,

I know i've read that the stock tires on our cars are, across the board, garbage but i feel like they are wearing really fast on me. I've got about 14.5k - 15k on my Fit and i feel like the tires are going to be done by 16k or 17k. I saw a lot of other posts saying that people were getting 23k-24k.

The tread wear seems mostly even across all the tires.. I rotated them at 10k when the maitenance minder told me to. The rears are worse than the fonts (Rotated from front to back at 10K) with the driver side rear being the worst of all four. I drive it a little hard sometimes when accelerating but usually only average about 65mph on the highway.

It doesn't seem to drive any different from when i purchased the car and it drives straight. It is a bit squirly in windy weather at highway speed but it's always been like that so i assumed thats how they drive and that it wasn't an alignment thing...

Is this something i should look in to or is it likely just my driving habits?

If you have the OEM Dunlops then that is par for them.

You might want to look at a replacement tire with a higher tread wear rating. I went with Yokohama Avid Ascend for it's high treadwear rating. Also it is a LRR (Low Rolling Resistance) tire made in the USA.

There are many others out there with better ratings than the OEM Dunlops.

Ok, it's good to hear that this is average. I'll probably be replacing them in a month or two before i move to Cali. I was kinda disappointed to find that i was going to have to replace them before moving as I've really been trying to save money. Oh well lol.

Thanks for the response.

When you're looking to get the tires, check Home - Discount Tire Direct, I'm about to get tires and they have the best price that I've seen from anywhere by far.

16K or 17K may be a bit below average, but seems within the range of what's normal. Some depends on how little tread you're willing to live with; legally in most places you can go down until it's even with the wear bars, but there's a noticeable loss of traction somewhat before that point, particularly in tough conditions (wet roads, snow, etc.).

At least now you'll have nice new (quieter) tires for your trip. Assuming you'll be driving the Fit there, that will make it more pleasant.

Well good for you, you're better off.

Check alignment, it's been known to be off from the factory.

I was kind of surprised on how long they held up. On the other hand my Wife's 12 Camry XLE with Michelin tires and 6k (20k to date) less in miles needs replacing already. So altogether looking at approximately $1,000 in tires before winter

I replaced my Dunlops at 14k miles

They wear down FAST if most of your driving is 70mph+

I put on 195/60/15 General Tire Altimax HPs

SUPER happy. way better in every way and instead of terrible ratings like the Dunlops, these Altimax's have HIGH ratings and on tirerack there are over 25 MILLION miles reported
EDIT and at HALF the price of the Dunlops, you are getting much more then twice the bang for your buck. these guys took rainy roads like a damn champion!

PureContact with EcoPlus Technology had a $100 rebate for only five days on Discount Tire. I was waiting for some kind of deals.

$100 rebate also applies to the DWS.

About 3lbs over stock or 12lbs in total but rated high on tread wear and all season performance a major factor for me.

You got 15s? I looked at a few rare 15s or going with Enkei 15x7 but I am staying with the OEM Sport for now. The 15" wheels seemed to aloow for more tire options which surprised me.
