What the heck is up with my tires????

Hey guys, I got stock sport dunlop tires on the 15 inch rims, what 90% of you guys have. I have almost 26K on my year and a half old Fit and have had my tires rotated two or three times, can't remember. I always keep perfect air pressure and while i have been known to corner hard on occasion for the most part I drive fairly conservatively, especially with gas prices! Here is my question, WHY ARE MY FRONT TIRES NEARLY BALD??? The wear line is like maybe 2mm away, on the back maybe 4mm! How are your guys' stock dunlops holding up? I think I might have to take a trip to the used tire king, i can't afford new ones right now!

Bald Tires?

Arashi,

I was thinking that with 45,000 miles on the odometer, my tires were wearing really well. I do mostly freeway driving. In daily driving, I don't corner hard enough to make my tires squeal. I try to brake smoothly. I usually keep my air pressure at 35psi. I've had mine rotated once or twice maybe. I'm not really sure, I usually take it to the dealer for service and let them do their thing.

Wear at 26K sounds a bit premature. I just installed Skunk2 springs, and have been monitoring for wear. Perhaps your alignment should be checked. Have you done any suspension mods? How exactly are your tires wearing? Evenly?

It is not unusual for even lightweight FWD cars to quickly wear out front tires if you live in congested or mountainous or very crooked roads. The more, the harder you turn, brake, and accelerate the shorter the tire life. (try an Olds Toronado that may get 5000 if driven slowly).
Most of your Fit's tire effort is in the front tires for braking, turning, and accelerasting. (I got 18k on my fronts but then i am agressive and didn't rotate either. cheaper to replace 2 tires at a time than 4 and rotate)
If you rotated your tires 2 or 3 times in 26000 miles why are your front ties worn so much more than the rears? If the extra wear came since the last rotation you could have an alignment problem. Someone knowledgeable about tires needs to look at your tire for wear patterns that could point to a problem.
In any case, visiting a reputable used tire dealer or recapper isn't a bad thing. Just be careful.
Good luck.

Might be related to Heat. The warmer your tire gets, the more easier it'll wear out. I know that asphalt around here gets way hotter than the temperature in the air.

Any kind of corner increases wearing on the tires in the front. Smoother cornering will reduce the wearing by a little. ALso make a note that cornering in hot weather increases tire wear.

Well to be honest I do love freeway onramps, 35 indeed.... lol. However, I have done this with every car i've had before whether it be with michelins or continentals, I've never experienced wear like this at such low mileage! They are definitely wearing closer to the outside of the tire, but I suspect that is the hard cornering. I'll try to take a picture for you guys, and I'm thinking of taking a trip to America's Tire Co. or the like to see what they have to say.

Several people have complained about the stock tires and having replaced them found different brands worked much better. I just had mine rotated and normally do with each oil change. I am still trying to decide on new
rims and I hope new tires will not come any sooner than they need to.

Do you need to have the TPMS sensors reset when you rotate tires?

get the car's alignment checked - i'm 99% sure your front toe is out of spec. I had my alignment done at 6,000 miles - it was already out of spec! Rotating will only delay the damage a bad alignment will do...no matter what kind of tires you're running. Our Fits only have front toe-factory adjustments anyway...

hmmmm, i think your tires are bald because you drive them hard. you said you like to take quick turns so you shouldn't be too surprised that your OEM economy tires are wearing out.

The dealer said 30K is normal for these... ugh that blows so much a** it's not even funny. I can't afford 300-500 bucks for new tires!

the tires suck they last 1.5 summers for me and the summers are very short in canada ( 9 months of driving ) 2 were absolutly bald. I have a 2004 echo that came with michelins that are still original (100,000 km)

huh... that's crazy long treadwear.

try some ziex912's. they are not the best tires but last a long time...

as posted above, check out edge racing. then find a buddy or someone
that works at a tire shop and have them mount it for you for like $10 a
pop. any tires with 300AA or more treadwear is wat you want for your
application.

Thanks for the recommendations guys, Edgeracing.com seems to be pretty cheap especially compared to going to a tire shop... I really appreciate it!

I put Bridgestone Potenza tires on my previous car (02 Saturn L300), and I was very happy with them and the treadwear, usually about 60K miles. I plan on replacing the stock tires with Potenzas when the time comes.
