Well I'm at ~35,000 miles now, and my tires are at 1/32 tread... they are getting way down there but I was hoping to make it until winter before replacing them.

Except I'm driving from san francisco to chicago 9 days...

I'm assuming everyone will tell me to replace them first.

Can I make it safely, assuming there probably won't be much rain/snow at the beginning of august?

Also, dealer quoted me $515... (I'm assuming for stock replacements.) I should probably go to an independent tire service place and get something better than stock right?

Do it - NEVER assume..... especially three time in a row!

 

1/32 is legally bald. It also means you've worn into the wear bars.

I'm with KC, get new tires, don't assume.

Downside of new tires now.., you paid for new tires sooner than you would like.

Downside of sticking with older tires... your tires are just bald enough for you to lose traction and suffer much more damage that you coulve avoided.

Is that really worth it to you?

 

I'd shop around but be careful of tires that are priced real low because they could be old stock, dried out and sure to wear as well as not perform as well... Tire Rack has a lot of good info that may be of help to you in making a purchase but they are a little bit high on there prices.. You must drive very conservatively to have gotten the miles you did out of your OEM tires, almost twice what I got out of mine.

 

Good! I'm not the only one whose OEM's are going at about 16k miles..

For the OP definitely get the new tires. It's not worth the risk to try and inch it out.

 

I think I probably could've gotten 24k miles out of mine, if I hadn't gotten that bubble and hole. I think that's horrible, since the last tires I bought for the Nissan Pathfinder not too long before buying the Fit, were rated to go 70,000 miles! For stock OE, I would expected at least 40k or 50k miles

 

To OP, change the tires. That's a heck of a journey and would be foolish to even risk driving around on those tires down the block to get groceries.

That's what you'd hope, but tire manufacturers design the tires to the car manufacturers specs. Nowadays, they are looking for the most fuel efficient and ride comfort design, which inadvertently kill the mileage on OE tires.

 

Get new tires. Driving cross-country on bald tires is a recipe for disaster.

$515 out the door for OEM replacement tires is pretty good. Guaranteed the replacements will be much better than the tires that came on the car. It's not unheard of to have the same tire made many different ways for different cars, while the replacement tire with the same name is worlds different.

 

I would never use the fudge factor on tires. 35k is pretty good actually. I'm a procrastinator but not on tires/brakes.

Chicago and back? For me it's not worth the risk just to try and squeeze out more mileage on something you'd have to replace anyway.

Make it safely? Heat is just as much a factor as rain/snow. Imagine a blowout at freeway speeds with the Fit's itty-bitty tires to begin with. replace, rePLACE, REPLACE!

Try Wheelworks. I bought some Falken commuter tires from them. Keep an eye out for specials on Sunday ads.

I don't think it's worth it to risk your life, and others' for a few bucks.
I do pretty silly things sometimes, and in retrospect, I've risked much more than the reward I got out of it.

Chances you won't get into an accident, but do you want to take that risk?
AND you'll be doing quite a lot of driving. you'll be thinking more about when you drive and it'll cause you extra stress.

You can go to a local tire dealer and probably find a cheaper solution if need be.
