Back Seat Recline

Have you thought of any possibilities to allow the back seat to recline with the cargo cover? I was thinking about scoring the underside of the cover, making sure not to cut the to edge, so that it could fold up. Perhaps taping the fold would help with its longevity. Where can I buy gaffer's tape?I had a friend at college who swore by it, said it could stick to anything including carpet. But I don't know where to buy a roll.

I measured mine to fit the most reclined position. Gaffers tape on amazon I purchased recently is here:

I scored the length of the underside so it can fill gap if the seats are upright, and it folds up if they are reclined. I like it, I think it works great. Thanks for the guide!

Can you show a detailed picture of how you make your cover to fold when reclining? Thanks.

You can see how I cut the board to fit to the space behind the seats when they're upright. I used a straight edge to cut partially through board, but not completely.

To make sure the possible bending of the paper ply does tear, I taped across the fold.

I also went ahead and taped to edges to protect them. The only thing I've noticed is that the paper plies don't like to get wet. I'm not sure what will work well to repel water, possibly spray paint.

Any tips on how to create the template? All the curves makes it seem pretty tricky ha.

Quoting my own post.... It got munched a bit and now folds in half. I probably should have made it double thickness from the get go. A word of advice to those considering this mod. I may be able to glue my left over piece on top and trim to firm it up a bit. Otherwise I may buy the sturdy OEM version.

I've made my own cargo cover with a corrugated plastic sheet. It's been used for about a month now and the heat has made it sag a bit but it still fits well. The flap on the front end helps keep the shape of the cover.

I thought about doing a retractable one, but the trunk isn't square shape so it'd either have to be too big or too small.

I made my own seen in this thread: https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/3rd-...ml#post1314882

It's easy enough to make your own pattern if you have a big piece of cardboard, or buy some foam board. Foam board is what I used to make my own with some curtain rods. I covered it in felt and I think it came out pretty well. Definitely cheaper than the nearly $200 from Honda.

Thats really nice! I'd def take a shot at that approach!

My 1990 Civic SI had a hard plastic tray that dropped over the storage space like the Fit factory tray - but it was big and in the way when you didn't want it and had to load taller items. At $120 or more, the factory one for the Fit Gen2 is just too dear!

My 04 CR-V had a retractable one - (like a wide windowshade) that dropped into a pair of grooves midway, and had a full width panel that pulled out of the back, and a pair of 60/40 width shades that pulled out of the front and clipped to the backseat headrest posts ... with everything retracted you could stow it out of the way pretty easily. But the CRV had a rectangular area to cover

But this black panel is perfect and the price is fantastic! Kudos for that great idea!

I may get a sheet of 1/8 plywood for the main piece and contact cement the black foamboard on top.
Maybe get some black door-edge molding (JC Whitney??) to put around the outer edge ...

I showed my brother-in-law my DIY and he wants to make one for his CRV. I looked at it and said that would be a piece of cake since it's really a rectangular.

Just to edit, and my DIY since it's flat it's easy to store if you have something big to carry. I think the factory one is a bit taller since it's curved to give a little more height so it'd use up more space.

I'm thinking about doing this with some ply board instead. Should provide much more longevity and actually be able to hold some weight.

In this thread, they used hardboard and it still warped a bit over time: https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/fit-...rgo-cover.html

It may be a good idea to add some reinforcement of some type.

Sure - thats hardboard - but I think thin plywood (1/8 or similar) would be stronger with the alternating strands/plies helping avoid warping. And black felt on top (contact cement?) makes it look very professional.
Great ideas y'all!

1/8 is pretty thin and would probably bow as well with that span. The other guy used a thicker 3/16 piece of hardboard and it still bent.

I ended up doubling it up with glue and its much better, but still bows a little.

When I initially built mine, I doubled too. I found it still bowed so I added curtain rods for support. They're pretty strong and still allow it to be lightweight.
