I have a Milano Red 2015 MT fit and the bottom of the leading edge of the hatch on the top of the car has chipped all of the way across. I know that some colors have had paint adhesion troubles, and my hood looks like it has car herpes since ever little thing will chip it. So has anyone seen something similar?
i don't have red but i can tell you the modern metal gray on my '19 LX was put on very thin in spots , easily prone to scratches , never seen
anything like it . i'm hoping keeping a good wax on it help
Weird that the newer models are still having paint problems. Figured most of the paint problems with the 2015's were due to growing pains at the new factory. I remember cringing when I saw the adhesion problems with some of the white ones.
The good news is that using the touch up brush it was easy to put on a thicker layer of paint that looks pretty good unlike my hood.
Not sure if this is a possibility for you, but if you waxed/detailed the car recently you might just be seeing some dried wax that you didn't reach during the buffing process.
I often saw something quite similar along panel edges on my previous car (a blue Yaris) after waxing. It's pretty easy to tell with your finger: rough equals a paint issue, but if you're lucky and it disappears (while your fingertip turns gray) you just missed some dried up wax.
The original paint problem on the Fit was due to the top coats of paint being too thin on white cars allowing UV light to penetrate down to the primer destroying it's adhesion and allowing the top coats then to peel off. The problem described above, whatever it is, is totally different.
Thanks for the suggestion, but it's not wax. The fist thing I did was open the hatch so that I could run my finger along it and see if it would wipe off.
Thanks for the explanation of what had caused the adhesion problems on the white ones. Just new that it happened, and saw the pictures of the results. Never knew why it had happened.
I went to a touchless car wash a day or so before I noticed it. I had been to the same car wash several times before with no problems. I'm wondering if the the paint on the edge is too thin to resist the forces of the high pressure jets causing it to spall.

Interesting .....made me go down and check our '15 just now , black pearl metallic or whatever they called it.....has a slight amount of the same thing going on, not bad.....am wondering if it's just wear from road grit as it flows over the car, same as it can affect the headlights/front end of the car? Dunno if it's a "defect" or just "normal" (depending on your driving conditions) That's the least of my body/paint problems, our car has plenty of scrapes/bumps/bruises, none self inflicted. I happen to live where folks don't care if they they hit/scrape your car in a parking lot. Luckily, it's mostly on the rubbery plastic bumper covers, but, man, it cheeses me off. Luckily, nothings been down into bare metal, and a black Sharpie works well as a touch-up pen on mine....LOL
