Question Manual Transmission hard to shift sometimes

Hey!

| Honda Fit GK 2020 5-speed MT | All stock | 12,500 miles/ 20000 km | bought it at 12,000 miles |

As the title says but it is usually when shifting from a stop; N -> 1 and N -> R. I always have to press the clutch 1 to 2 times before it engages. Not all the time though. I'd say 1 out of 5 it happens.

I've checked my gear oil and it looks fine. What could be the problem? or is it a problem with honda fits? I've read a review on honda fits especially gk and there's always this problem.

Thanks!

You’re on the right track

As a Honda Fit owner who has had theirs 9+ years, I change the transmission fluid(with AMSOIL Synchromesh) every year, or every 20,000 miles whichever comes first. The synchros are notoriously weak and finicky, and at least in my Fit, the fresh fluid really helps keep the trans feeling slick.

Like @newengland72 said, change the MT fluid. I use Honda MT Fluid.

I also suggest changing the fluid ASAP. I swapped to Royal Purple Synchromesh.
"Amazing" would be an understatement.

As others have mentioned with these cars, the trans doesn't shift from N>1 usually very easily.
A way I've found to alleviate the additional force required to get the shifter into gear, would be to let off the brakes and let the vehicle roll a few centimeters forward OR backwards.
While it's rolling, you apply light pressure to the shift lever and it'll always "plop" into gear.
Works everytime!

Time for a new skill

BMWguy22 has an excellent point; I often blip the throttle with my transmission in Neutral and the clutch out when trying to get into 1st or Reverse. This causes the synchros to spin and helps get the ready to get into those tough gears.
Best of luck

I had to do that little 'double clutch' dance before changing my MTF. I used Honda OEM and it's better, but not amazing. I will definitely be trying Royal Purple next time. So expensive, though.

Just one

I used to feel the same way, but then after changing it a few times, I figured out that it only takes one quart. Every time I tried to put the second quart in, it would just run over. So now I only buy one quart. Still $30/qt AMSOIL Synchromesh from Amazon but for only once a year not a real big deal.
