Fuel Door Cable
Fuel Door Cable
A friend has a 2015 CR-V, and the fuel door cable broke. Her local mechanic, who is usually very good, said it would cost about $300 to repair. The cable cost less than $50. There is a lot of labor involved, though. A lot of the interior panels must be removed. Still, $300 sounds excessive. I think she's going to just remove the little door. It's over ten years old with over 300,000 miles. If it was my car, I'd replace the cable myself.
I wouldn't do it when it's this cold (8°), though. 😊

Based on your description ("a lot of labor involved," which could easily be billed at $75+ an hour), $300 seems reasonable.
The door provides some security from getting gas siphoned and/or having pesky teens vandalize your fuel system. If your friend doesn't care about those potential issues, or about appearance, or if they are willing to invest a lesser a lesser amount in a locking gas cap, it's probably not worth $300 for this repair.

If she still has the car, I'll do it for free when the weather gets warm.
