Oil jets?

I've seen some of the online reviews for the 2015 Fit and they tend to mention several things like direct injection but they also say it has oil jets that spray onto the underside of the pistons. Wait - I thought the current Fit did that too? Isn't that a pretty basic thing? Does anybody have engine docs or experience taking the engine apart to know whether the second-gen (I have a 2013) U.S. Fit has this?

No, it doesn't matter much. Just seemed odd.

Not sure about the oil jets, but Honda has a much deserved reputation for reliable engines, and I'm certain they have had proper lubrication down pat for decades.

It's got to lube the piston pin somehow.

Right - so why do the articles talk about the new engine having "new" things like direct injection, DOHC, and oil jets that spray the underside of the pistons - as if that last thing is new? If it IS new, how is that thing getting oil on it *now*, in my 2013 Fit?

V8 engines get the skirt lubed just from splashing oil from the crank spinning. Not sure about 4cyl but would think same principal. Oil spray would definitely ensure lube properly gets to pistons

Oil jets are used to cool the undersides of the pistons. They've been around for a very long time but I'm not sure of which Honda engines use them. I'm pretty sure that Honda engineers have considered all the lubrication and cooling issues whether the jets are used in a particular engine or not.

It's funny how marketing people pick up on an engineering detail and then crow about it like it's something revolutionary.

Cooling the underside of the pistons with oil reliably lowers piston crown temperature especially at sustained high RPM use. These are high compression ratio engines and detonation caused by high piston temperatures would be quickly kill the rod bearings.

Oil jets spray on the underside of piston domes to increase cooling when engines run at extended rpm, like 7000 rpm cause the cooling is needed a lot. Its not needed on 5200 rpm engines. Get pistons too hot and they warp and ruin piston rings among other things.
