I need to figure out how to read the vin #

Well the last 7 digits of my vin are
M707498

Does that mean there has already been 707498 fits made in such a short time?

 

the beginning 7 does not count. You have a pretty early version (#7498)
Mine is in the early 10,000's

 

What exactly happens if the production exceeds 99,999?

 

I got a REALLY early one.... 700876. The first "7" indicates "US market" -- presumably there are other numbers for Canada, Europe, Japan, etc. Also, that serial number is only for my trim line: EX CVT. The other trim lines have their own sequential numbering. So I got the 876th EX CVT to have been made for the US.

 

Only the last four characters have to be numbers so there are a actually 360,000 unique VINs available.
