Given the overwhelming popularity of small crossovers and their greater profitability for the manufacturers, I'm not terribly surprised. I wonder about the future of the Fit, now that Honda has their own small crossover.

I drove a 6MT iM a few weeks ago. My Fit has nothing to worry about.

I don't think that the Fit has much to worry about either of these cars. The Mazda2 is already not being sold in the US now officially for 2016, so it's out of the running.

The Scion iM is a segment larger in size and price. Starting at about $19,000, it's main competitors are the Ford Focus and Mazda 3 hatchbacks. Some folks may cross shop a Fit with the iM, but even then it's not much of a threat. I liken Scion to being to Toyota what Saturn was to GM. A new brand to change the minds of folks (especially younger buyers) about the company, in this case Toyota's bland image. The first generations were a success beyond Toyota's wildest dreams, but now with the second and third generations of cars, they're not sure how to follow up that success and it's all mostly rebranding. We have a rebadged Subaru, Toyota Auris from other markets, and a Mazda 2 in their showrooms, and none with the vigor or eccentricity of the original Scion xB that made the sub-brand a success.

The iA is probably the more direct competitor for the Fit. However, it doesn't come with the Fit's versatility and is strictly a four door sedan. Some buyers will cross shop, but I think Fit buyers intentionally only want a hatchback. I don't count on the iA being a success story

The Fit's main and most fierce competitors remain the same ol' crowd for years. Namely, the Big Mac of subcompact cars, the Nissan Versa. They're cheap, offer a lot in terms of size and room, and sell fast. The all-around competent and American made Chevy Sonic, the fun to drive Fiesta, and bang-for-the buck, peace-of-mind warranty offering Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio.

I don't think the Scion's sales will even be a blip compared to those cars or the Fit
