2016 U.S. CarPlay Vehicles: Chevrolet, Honda, Volkswagen and More

How long do you think we'll have to wait for a software/firmware upgrade for our 2015 HU to get Carplay? At least Honda is listed as a forerunner.

As far as I could research, Honda has never done a retroactive update on an HU. Honda's Carplay is available in their new or yet to be released 2016 vehicles, and only specific ones, meaning you will need to buy a new car on their list to get it. Their 2016 list does not include the Fit.
So to answer your question, a 2015/2016 Fit HU update will never happen.

Just to add to the discussion, Honda also has never enabled owners to update their HU online, unlike Ford. If there are security or other software updates it is uncertain how Honda would accommodate this. Simply ignore the need for a software change? As the car owner to visit the dealer? These are questions that have yet to be answered by Honda. Tesla and Ford have online updates. Ford owners download the update to a stick and then into the car. For Honda we do not know.
iphone, Android and Ubuntu have been doing this for years. There is no reason Honda and other car manufacturers cannot do the same.

I also don't want to have my head unit (or the entire car) bricked by a failed update. Easy updates promote release of unfinished or buggy code.
If updates are needed, they should be distributed in some physical form (ROM, for example) so the manufacturers actually have to put some thought and care into what they do. Hackers will be deterred also, since they won't want to have to burn their malicious code into ROMs and figure out how to get them into cars.
The questions is, would enabling updates over the air or via the USB port create more security holes than they would address? Considering that automotive computer security is in its infancy I really don't want the entire world able to ping my car!

I had a 2012 Ford Focus with My Ford Touch. They sent a thumb drive once--to all affected owners because the code was SO bad. Rest of the time it was a multi step DL--car writes to blank stick, web site reads stick and downloads to it, car updates from stick (over an hour with the engine running and every setting gone at the end) and writes some completion code, website reads the completion code. That was fine and way better than having to go beg the dealer for bug fixes and having to know the exact phrases to recite from the TSB so dealer can claim "customer reported XXX" in order to get the warranty claim paid for. Or having to educate the dealer that the TSB actually exists.
I agree that OTA update is a bad idea unless there are lots of safeguards. (Though my Nexus 5 gets updates OTA just fine.) But having to go beg the dealer for updates will get to be a headache for people who have the '16 Accord, Pilot, Civic Display Audio. Because there will be updates. From the sound of things, more than one.
Speaking of which, before you all go apoplectic wishing you had Car Play in your Fits, you might want to read up about some of the headaches people who have it are having. E.g. Be careful what you wish for!

This is a pain in the ass, and it also freaks out pretty much every other system in the car, at least briefly. The first time I did it, I was notified that all sorts of systems would take some time to initialize. The 2nd time, I just got a continuous stream of errors concerning the ABS, VSA, brake hold, hill start assist, TPMS, Road Departure Mitigation System, CMBS. Turning the car off and on again caused all of these errors to go away, but the CarPlay system is borked and it needs to be fixed. The good news is that they seem to store the radio's memory locations in some sort of NVRAM or flash memory, because it remembers your presets even after pulling battery cable.

Wow. I didn't think it was this bad. All I need is my aux input. Yes, software maturity should be a high priority but obviously is not. There is such a disconnect between car manufacturers and Apple/Android. I'd rather watch from the sidelines than be caught in the middle. This should be fun to watch, if you're not directly involved.

Maybe in 20 years these fancy computer entertainment systems will be debugged enough for me to trust them, but til then I'd prefer to stick with something that has less moving parts...
