Welcome to the forum!
Everything is negotiable. One strategy is to use the internet as your friend.
If you have a Sam's Club, Costco or BJ's Wholesale membership, start with their car buying program and see what price you get as a baseline. That will give you a rough idea of any discount available without having to negotiate. But you can do better.
Expand your search radius as far as you need to so that at least a half-dozen dealers are competing for your business. Contact their internet rep (virtually all dealers have one these days) and tell them what model, color & options you want. Tell them the one that gives you the best price up front gets your business.
When you get the internet offers, go over them carefully. Many offers have gotchas built in. Excludes destination fee, excludes dealer prep, etc. I went to the trouble of comparing all the offers on a piece of paper to obtain a final price from each.
Once you get the offers, visit the dealer with the first lowest offer and try to negotiate even lower. Be prepared to walk. Threaten to visit the next lowest offer, etc. Tell them you need time to think about their offer. Anything you need to do to get the lowest price. They want you to sign today. You want to bargain from a position of strength.
BTW, this is how I purchased my '16 LX. Got over $1100 off list with no options. People here said it couldn't be done, that I was getting the vehicle for less than cost, but I still got my deal.

There are many auto websites that estimate what you should pay for the car. Do a google for "what I should pay for a Honda Fit" simple, right? I did for my 2017 LX CVT, $18K out the door in TX. Still ringing with happiness. Just a few pointers, getting over 40+mpg and even hit 50 mpg with a tail wind. The Honda estimates mpg is about 2-2.5 mpg optimistic.

You haven't done your homework yet. Car buying program price? How many internet offers have you received so far? If it's only one offer and you haven't investigated a car buying program price, you're just scratching the surface. Gotta dig deep and be prepared to do a lot more homework if you want a better discount. Of course, if you just want things easy, by all means, stay with that one dealer and pay whatever they ask.
I live in CT too. I have a 2008 Fit Sport manual transmission that I plan on trading in for an 2018 EX automatic in the spring. Please post which dealer you end up buying from.
As far as sales tax goes, it's around 6.5 which is actually not all that out there. We moved up here from FL 7 years ago and at the time FL sales tax was 6.35. Massachusetts has a very similar rate.
