Low speed knocking - driver side strut?

Hey guys. I just drove down from Seattle to Austin in my 2015 EX CVT (about 2.3k miles). The car felt a little off during the drive but I just chalked it up to paranoia.

We arrived in Austin safely but a day or two afterwards, I started hearing a knocking in the driver side dash. First it was only on bumps and cracks at low speeds but then it started showing up on smooth roads. I took it to the nearest garage since chassis and suspension issues freak me out. They say it's the driver side strut going out.

I took a look at it myself, the only problem I could see without taking it apart was the top bolts. Driver side looks tighter than the passenger side. Not sure if that's a sign of failure or maybe the passenger side got loose over time or maybe they were torqued incorrectly on the factory floor. What do you guys think?

I talked to Honda since I'm just 1.8k miles over the general warranty. They side they might be willing to cover it so I'm taking it into the dealership down here to get it looked at.

The most common cause of suspension 'knocking' noises on Hondas are the sway bar end links.

The non-greasable factory links have a plastic collar inside that allows knocks when they wear. Trouble is, they knock before you can tell if there is any slop. (Meaning, you just need to replace 'em)

+++++++++

We replaced the links in our '07 Fit at 70K miles. Used greasable MOOG links. Still quiet after another 75K.

We started to get a knock on our '06 CR-V too, but I started greasing the factory links (with a needle attachment on my grease gun). Guess what? The knocks in the V are gone!

FWIW, the upper shock mounts on our '07 look different, like yours...but no issues.

yah i dont know about most common for Hondas but in this case, you can see clearly from the op's picture that the mount is loose to the tower.

MOOG lists sway bar links for the Fit up to 2014. Part numbers for OEM are different between the different generations, but no way to know if the older parts will work without ordering them and trying. Looks like GD and GK have different part numbers for left and right, and GE is the same for both sides. Tempted to order a GD set now, but hate to spend $60 and find out it's not going to work.

May have to try the grease gun approach, I'm getting assorted knocks too, and tightening the upper mount only fixed half the problem.

Rock Auto lists several brands for the '15. Beck Arnley seem to be the favorite. None of the three brands seem to be greaseable (but there is always the needle option).

I bet the length is different between years...

Thanks for the info, I'll probably have to make an order soon. I wish they listed dimensions, if the GD parts were a bit shorter then it might work better with lowered cars.

Make friends with a dealer's parts counterman, see if you can measure the two generations...

Thanks for the info guys! I got a chance to peek under the hood of a band new Fit and I saw both top mounts for the front struts are "loose" - like the passenger side in the photo above but without the rubber residue on the chassis. So I guess that's how it supposed to look like off the factory floor.

Now... I'm not sure if the "sandwiching" on my driver side is normal wear or related to the knocking but I left it with the dealer and will update with what they diagnose.

$150 for the diagnosis thou. I need to find a new friend with a lift down here...
