I liked the very last sentence in the article: "Hondas are looking better all the time." Realistically though both companies are clearly much the same - when the warranty is over, it over!

 

That's unfortunate.
But I guess I can't blame you. Vehicles in The Fits class aren't rare. You have choices, and I don't know if I'd want to wait 4 months either. BUT....also I think anticipation can be fun.

I do like the new Honda Civics. If I was in the market for a new vehicle, I think maybe the Honda Civic would be what I'd be looking at.
Subaru also has a lot of really great vehicles.

Still rumors that Ford is going to discontinue selling a lot of their hatchback and sedan offerings in North America. Don't know if that would influence me to NOT buy a Ford right now.
But in any case, there are a lot of options that I think one can look at.

Years ago, I was shopping for my new vehicle. I really had narrowed it down to a Volkswagen. But when I actually went out to get one, availability was so scarce. Salesman were telling me go go home and start a multi-state search.
Even though at the time The Volkswagen was my #1 choice, I ended up at a Honda Dealership and looking at Honda Fits, because of the opposite at the time reality. There were a LOT of Honda Fits to choose from, on the lot. I ended up buying my 2010 Honda Fit. And since this is now my 2nd Fit...I don't regret it. But I understand having to move on from a #1 choice, because of availability issues.

This was around 2010...and I was actually kind of shocked at how unhelpful the Volkswagen sales people were. They basically said...we don't have any, and if you want one, you'll have to wait or go initiate your own multi-state search.
Since I didn't feel like doing either......they lost the chance to create a Volkswagen owner.

 

My experiences with VW were always unpleasant. The last time I talked to them, decades ago, I phoned a salesman to find out what the price was on the new Scirocco which had just been released. When he gave me the price which was up something like 17% from the year before I was surprised and politely asked why it had gone up so much. His response was to bluntly state that if I was daring to question their pricing then obviously I needed to move down to a lesser car in their lineup. That was VW at that time, pure arrogance. I vowed to never buy another car from them and haven't.

 

I guess it boils down to how badly you need a new car and how long you're willing to wait. I love our '15 LX, For a replacement, I could wait if I wanted another and still had transportation. If you NEED a new car like now, or don't wanna wait, there are other fish in the sea. As far as VWs go, my brother voiced similar complaints when he was shopping for a Golf ….he ended up buying a used Golf R elsewhere, and loves it - I have yet to lay eyes on it or drive it (600 miles away).....he hasn't mentioned a dealer once

 

I think the best substitute for the Fit is probably the Corolla Hatch.

That being said, I really like the new Civic Hatchback in Sport manual trim.

Here's my experience with VW...shopped a Corrado in 1992. Dealer was so-so and car was so-so. Bought a Mustang LX 5.0 instead. Shopped a Jetta tdi in 1999 and bought it. Other than exorbitant (compared to Jap or US cars) dealer service fees, the dealer was just fine. The car was NOT so great though. Plenty of small irritating things broke. Shopped for a replacement hatchback for the wife in 2017. Looked at the whole market and bought a Golf Wolfsburg. The dealer worked really hard to earn our business and, now at 30k miles, the car is so far great. It drives so much better than anything made by Honda, Toyota, Kia, etc that I'm living with the still higher maintenance costs. The dealer literally bugs the hell out of us though. Not trying to get more money, but wanting surveys filled out and asking us time and time again if we're happy with their service. Not sure if it's a push by VW or if it's part of the Autonation corporate structure. I'm glad they want us happy, but holy moly!

I think they are trying to earn a better reputation. That's not something that is easy to do in the automotive world.

Meanwhile, I'm hearing reports of the opposite from Honda and Toyota. It seems they are doing fewer and fewer warranty exceptions and sticking to their written policies. Look at how many people on here have had their 2015 Fit's fuel injectors go bad and Honda isn't helping despite it being a known problem.

I will never buy another VW because of how they cheated on emission controls. Their behavior has resulted in several thousand extra cases of cancer in the U.S. and that to me is criminally negligent murder.

 

Take it or leave it. Im (knocking on wood) very pleased with my gk5's reliability to this point(40k miles 0 issues, minmal maintenance oil and filters only).

 

Yes they cheated & so have so many other car companies. Not all on emissions some on safety. I know that doesn't make what they did right, but several thousand cases of cancer due to their cheating. Enlighten me, my BS detector is going off since I read that.

 

Don't forget all of the cheating and scandals from fuel mileage estimate lies that many have been busted for or the quality control testing that wasn't done or the fiery deaths from poor designs or the gear selectors that pop into neutral and run over people or the airbags that were known to be faulty or the....

Hope everyone gets the idea. If you're going to shop for a car based on the trustworthiness of a corporation that has the main goal of returning a profit, you're going to find yourself walking.

Edit - I don't like what VW did either and, if you're looking for an excuse to not step from Honda into a better driving vehicle, feel free to use it. It's a semi-legitimate excuse. I can even come up with other reasons since I've owned a few of each. I expect that, at the heart of the company, Honda is a tiny bit more socially responsible.

 

 

If you're OK with a Miata, how about a Civic Si coupe? It's still way, way more usable than the Miata, gets great fuel mileage, and certainly scores on the engaging scale.

 

Since you are all over the place, test drive a CR-Z. It's built on the fit chassis and has a nice sporty feeling with a surprisingly amount of torque down low. The build quality is top notch for the price point and the levels of refinement are a step above. Reliability is great. 12k for a CPO or 15K for a practically new 2016. I do like that new ND with the recaros and increased HP though!

 

 

Completely understand! The new Si is just not very engaging. Great car, but not exciting. I could imagine owning one someday, but it would end up heavily modified. Like the WRX, they are more of a blank canvas in need of some excitement sprinkled on top.
