Honda fit EX-L Burning Oil

Have a 2015 EX-L with 183,842 KMs on it. The last 2 Oil changes when it gets to about 50% there is no oil left. This time I wrote down the start and finish km.

Oil Changes at 177359 KM today it at 183842 KM and it seems to have no oil so I added some. So it seems after 6,400KM it burns all the oil. Any Ideas have not taken it to the Dealership yet but plan to make an appointment.

Thanks

Steven

Three suggestions..... 1) Check the oil level frequently (like, weekly?) and just add a little oil as needed. 2) Check for any oil leaks on the engine - remove the stupid underpanel and check, and is there any oil spotting on the ground?....is there blue smoke coming from your exhaust? I think you'd notice it if you're burning it that fast, maybe not. 3) Definitely make an appointment somewhere if you're going through that much oil. When you say "empty," do you mean down to, or below the "low" mark on the dipstick? I mean, how much oil does it take to get it up to the full line? 1 quart??? More??? You definitely need some work done. You really should be checking your fluid levels (and lights and tires) on a regular basis (fairly frequently) to help catch problems early and nip them before they become bigger problems or possibly do long term damage.

1) yes will need to check more often. Checked it this morning before starting and there was a very little amount of oil below the bottom line so its like empty. I added 1.5 Quarts this morning 2) dont see any leaks it parks in the same spot each night and nothing underneath. Lost that dam thing a long time ago on the hwy one day. 3) going to make an appointment today its still under warranty until 200KM

Thanks

All that oil is going somewhere.

First thing I'd do is check the engine compartment and see if any oil is deposited on the engine, say from a bad gasket. Like Fuelish said, I'd also see if you're getting oil via the exhaust. Have someone stand behind the car when it's first started, see if there's any blue or white smoke.

If it isn't either of those, that's when I start thinking cracked head or bad head gasket. Definitely needs to be checked out.

I'm hung up on the idea that your engine "has no oil." Running the engine completely out of oil would cause severe damage.

What line and when you fill it where does the oil level end up?

are you using 0w20? How often are you changing your oil?

Yes, many vehicles burn oil to some degree. But you don't want to be running your vehicle with the oil level empty or near empty. You need to check it, and keep it within the filled zone.
And IF you've been driving it with it very low, or empty...unfortunately you've probably done damage to the engine.

Also, the less oil in the system, the hotter the oil temperature will be and the faster the oil will burn. Check the oil more often and keep it topped off.

Thanks everyone for their comments. Oil change was done at the dealership so its 0-20. The below picture is from today which is after I added 1.5 qts a couple days ago. Before I added oil it was just a drop at the end. What made me notice something was off was the engine was whining louder under hard acceleration. Car is under warranty and have an appointment for Monday at the dealership.

Looks like it's time to switch to either 5w30 in the winter and ... wait for it .... drumroll .... 15w40 rotella T4 [get the 18 Liter bucket LOL] in the summer.

I owned the 2015 with the 6MT flavour and at 135k kms it was already burning 1 liter every 4000 kms or so. The quantity from top to low mark on dipstick is about 1 qt or 1 liter.

I wish you best of luck with getting the issue solved through warranty. My guess is that the dealer will deem the issue as normal wear and tear.

I'm curious how the dealership will approach this. I'm thinking they might do a compression test just to see what they've got before proceeding. Please let us know how it plays out.

Having dissected a couple of these engines,, I would not recommend going clear to 15w50 or anything like that..
The VVT depends heavily on the viscosity of the oil being in spec to make it work, and these engines
use lightweight piston rings,, they don't like heavy oil. 0-w30 would likely be OK, and without going off the deep end in a oil debate...
I find that some engines just like certain oils, My 07 likes the honda synthetic, it doesn't use it and it stays clean, both good signs to me.

An engine will easily go through oil especially the direct injected ones without smoking due to the temps the exhaust runs at..
I had the heads tore down when I did the head gasket 2 years back, the new valve guide seals definitely were a good thing.

If the "front" main seal on the crank leaks, it drips where its really hard to see. Do you have any oil on the back lower side of the pan??

Sorry. But can you elaborate?
I don't get the relation of a hot exhaust and oil consumption. Thanks

Update: Dealership did an oil change (Charged me) and asked me to come back every 1,000KM to monitor consumption. After the 6th visit they noticed it was missing a 1 Litre of OIL they then asked for all the records for my oil changes. So I went to my corner garage got and provided those. Honda Warranty has approved the work to replace the Short Block they are now ordering the parts for that. Not sure what a Short Block costs but its covered under my extended warranty which runs out soon as I'm at 195K on my 2015 Honda Fit EX-L. Warranty ends at 200K

That's great news! I haven't heard of Honda replacing entire GK5 blocks yet. The implication is a cracked block if they've already ordered up another one.

Short block is the lower half of the engine - pistons, rings, the "block". The upper half is called the "head", valves and cams. Short block is just the bottom, a long block includes the head.
