3rd Generation GK Specific DIY: Repair & Maintenance Sub-ForumThreads discussing repairs and maintenance you can do yourself on the 3rd generation Honda Fit (GK)
My 2016 Fit has 6X,XXX miles. Do I need to change the CVT fluid, and if so, I need instructions. What fluid do you use? Thanks.
I tried the search function but didn't find what I was looking for.
I would say that by 60,000 miles the CVT fluid should be changed. Get the fluid from your Honda parts counter. It's not cheap.
As for how to do the change go to Youtube.com and do a search on something like "fit cvt fluid change". Any videos for 2015 to 2019 Fits will do since those cars are all the same. Watch at least 4 different videos before attempting anything. Of the 4 videos I watched only one actually showed the proper way to do the change using all 3 drain/fill/level plugs. I haven't done this myself because my car is too new at the moment - I've just been doing some preliminary research. None of the YouTube videos really overwhelmed me with the quality of the filming and the level of detail they showed.
The lack of responses tell me not many people change their CVT fluid. I've done some searches on this site. A few have done it. Some say it's sealed - leave it alone. I'm wondering about the code. Some say if you get a code3 that tells you to change the fluid.
I've seen the wrench maintenance minder. When I do I change my oil and the wrench goes away (After I reset the %.)
So I don't know if my car is telling me to change the transmission fluid or not.

How do I find out if it is???
To be honest your CVT fluid should have been replaced for sure once, possibly twice by the 60k mile mark.
The maintenance minder would have prompted a "3" sub code to indicate transmission fluid replacement is due once the oil life either hits 15% or less OR is in the process to be reset if you do oil changes before that interval. For more information on the maintenance minder and/or its subcodes, please refer to pages 355 to 357 in your owner's manual.
For what fluid, as mentioned on page 368 of the owner's manual... HFC-2 transmission fluid is only recommend for your Fit. Due note that there are two versions of CVT fluid by Honda... These fluids are NOT cross compatible. HCF-2 is distinguishable due to being in a black bottle with a yellow label and of course be appropriately labeled HCF-2.
Finally, the CVT transmission is not sealed and is indeed serviceable in the usual drain and fill method Honda is known for. Replacing the CVT fluid is a bit like replacing manual transmission or differential fluid on most Hondas... you will need a hand pump to refill it to the proper level along with the appropriate sealing washers and correct fluid amount.

Hand pump ? What for? There are 3 drain/fill plugs. When you're ready to fill the CVT you take out the middle plug and then pour fluid into the top plug. When the fluid reaches the middle plug it starts coming out and that's when you stop pouring. The middle plug is there to set the fluid level. You've reached the proper level with the correct amount of fluid in the transmission. Yeah it's a bit messy as some extra fluid comes out the middle plug and down the side of the transmission to the drain pan.
Technically at this point you should temporarily close off the middle plug and drop the car from any ramps so that it's level. Move the gear selector slowly through the entire range - that's to get rid of any air bubbles trapped in the transmission - and then turn the car off. Take the middle plug out, add a bit more fluid to the top plug if necessary and then seal all the plugs up because you're done.
What crush washers does it need? I'd like to know beforehand and have them ready.
I'm getting ready to order 4 qts of fluid off Amazon. Not having removed the plugs, I'm not sure which washers to get.
Seriously, thanks everyone for your help. I thank you. My Fit thanks you, too.
Just did it. At 71,xxx miles it needed it. What came out was pretty dark. It took nearly all 4 quarts. (I don't think I spilled all that much.). I didn't have a replacement washer for the level plug but I did have one for the drain.
All in all, pretty routine procedure.
Thanks everyone. You guys sure know your groceries.
Don't omit the step where you cycle the gear shift lever then re-check the fluid level. I had to top-off with at least 1/2 quart of fluid after getting the air bubbles out.
