My son is getting ready to return a leased 2017 Honda Fit EX and purchase a 2020. When he leased the 2017, we installed Body Side Molding and Splash Guards. These accessories cost about $250, just in parts. Should I remove them prior to returning the car so I can use them on the 2020? The splash guards are pretty simple to remove, but the Body Side Molding will be a lot more challenging.

Or, perhaps I should let the dealer know that these accessories were installed to see if they would give me credit towards the purchase of new accessories for the 2020.

Absolutely, remove them prior to the lease turn-in, otherwise you lose their value. This assumes you can remove them without marring surfaces, as dealers will ding you on that.

I doubt the dealer will offer you anything for them, but you could always ask first, then remove if they don't seem interested in offering you something in return.

 

Actually, I just thought of something. The 2017 Fit is White Orchid Pearl, whereas the 2020 is Platinum White Pearl, so that's going to be a no-go for the body side molding. The splash guards will not be a problem. Although I do recall that I had to remove the rear wheels to install them, so maybe it's not worth it.

 

I'd look at the lease literature... I can't imagine a dealer would want a lease back with modifications, no matter how minor.

 

The rear wheels were probably only removed to give you easier access to the screw/bolt-heads when installing the splash guards.

Splashguards are what $50? I'd just leave them. If you remove them, it may show some scratches where the mated near the painted surface. Just buy new ones and save yourself the headache.

 

Yeah, I totally agree. I left everything on the leased car and just purchased new accessories. Thanks to everyone who responded with help and advice.
