tires for rain
tires for rain
I have a 2015 Fit Sport. Currently running Kuhmo Ecsta tires. There is an alarming slippage in even light rain. The tires are better than what was on it before, but I am looking for suggestions. I don't know if the traction control has something to do with the way the car reacts in the rain, the car slips sideways, then immediately corrects., or if it is a tire issue. Any thoughts?

I'm running general Altimax rt43 and have been happy with them but they've got about 50k on them. Last time I measured it was between 3-4/32 though so close to needing replacement and you can tell in the harder rains. Wasn't a problem when new.
Does the slippage occur during quick, side-to-side motions? Or during tight turns (90 degrees)? Over painted lines?
I do not know what your tread depth is, or which specific Kumho Ecsta tires you use, but I have the Ecsta PA51 and they have been good in the rain. I do not push too hard with slick roads, but never have I felt the car slip.

Slippage is on straight roads, with less than an inch of water standing. The ecsta tire I am running is the PA 31 in 185x55x16.. I chose them because they appeared to have a nice edge pattern to channel water from beneath the tire. I wonder if it is the traction control taking over when it feels a side slip? I drive conservatively, particularly in the rain. What I experience is a quick side slip that instantly corrects itself. It is a bit unnerving, as I don't know how it would react at a higher rate of speed, or in deeper rain puddles.
How is the alignment and when last was it done? If you can invest in a tread depth meter (only a few dollars) it can show you how the tread is doing. If certain sections are wearing faster than others, it may show a bad alignment or not rotating tires enough, but you say it's happened since new.
It kind of sounds like a temporary hydroplaning. What speeds is this happening on?

Overdue for alignment, but don't want to do it until tires are replaced. Tread is great on front, and within spec on rear (Have tread gauge) It does feel like a temporary hydroplane, but at speeds of 35 to 45 mph, that's a bit strange. I may need to let the Honda dealer take a look. This car was bought second hand about 3 years ago.
