2016 Honda Fit EX...the sound of silence....

I own a 2016 Honda Fit EX, keyless entry, push button start.
I usually NEVER let anyone else use or drive my car. But recent trying circumstance had me allow my Dad, to drive my Fit.

He's never owned a push button start vehicle OR a keyless entry, so when I handed him the fob, I told him he could use the unlock/lock, buttons on it, to unlock, lock the vehicle just as he does with his vehicle. Instead of explaining just opening the door, and then pressing the button to lock. It seemed easier to just let him use the fob, as he is use to using one.

Anyway, got the vehicle back, and now when I lock the vehicle...either using the fob, or using the buttons on the doors/hatch, while the vehicle does seem to lock, I no longer get the announcement beep. No beep or lights.
When I unlock the vehicle, I get a beep and lights.

But somehow it seems my Dad.....yes I'm blaming him, seems to have broken/changed how the vehicle locks. I no longer get a beep when locking or the usual blinking of lights.

I'm hoping this is an easy fix, or a programming issue?
Maybe my Dad accidentally pressed the wrong buttons in the wrong order for too long?
He's known to sometimes forget where he has parked and repeatedly press "lock" to activate the beep so he can hear where he is parked.

The vehicle does seem to be locking....unlocking and starting OK...so no emergency, but I'd like to have the lock announcement beep and lights blinking returned if possible.

OK...nevermind...figured it out.
And I owe my Dad an apology.

Somehow the front hood got popped. It wasn't closed completely.
Once I closed it correctly and completely, the beep/light function returned.

I'm kind of surprised there is a link between the hood and the lock/unlock notification. I checked all the doors and the rear hatch, but didn't even think about the hood.
Also kind of surprised I got no "Door Ajar" or other warning on my dash.

But just for other people in the future, if you get similar symptoms, check your front hood and make sure it's closed properly/completely.
No beep, no light, I guess IS a warning that your hood may not be latched completely/correctly.

On the 2016 the fuel release lever is just above the hood release lever. So I'm guessing it was just an accidental popping of the hood, when refueling.
The engine bay looked unmolested, so I don't think it was an attempt at theft or anything.

Oh yeah, I've popped the hood open thinking it's the fuel door. I might relocate one of those levers.

There was a thread that someone wasn't getting a beep when they hit the lock button twice. Come to find out, there was some front end repair and the body shop didn't reconnect the wire to the hood latch sensor. If you look there is a wire there going to the latch that holds the hood closed.

Well, ultimately that's what I've learned from this whole experience.
It's a good outcome.
I wasn't aware the latch that held the hood closed even had a connection to the auto lock system. The first thing I did when the beep wasn't working was check all the doors and the rear hatch. I didn't even think about the front hood. Now I know....check the hood.
Maybe lucky that the current Corona VIrus situation resulted in me NOT driving around with my hood popped but unlatched.
All in all, I'm just glad it's as simple a fix. I was worried it was something deteriorating with the entire system, that would result in some too expensive a fix. So I'm happy.

lol i once drove 100 miles with the hood popped before i got home and realized it. Those too levers are annoyingly similar. I've thought about wrapping one with bright electrical tape to change the tactile feel of it when i reach down without looking, and if i were to chance a glance before pulling the lever it'd be that much more apparent.

Repeat after me. The top one is the gas cap. The bottom one is the hood. Again! Again! Again, until your brain is trained. You don't a problem with remembering which is the signal/light stock and the wiper stock do you? Yea, they look very much the same.

Airplanes have the flaps lever flat and the gear lever a small vertical wheel to try to stop people from using the wrong one. But people still mess up, which is why pilots are taught not to retract the flaps until they're fully on the ground (you can't retract the gear once the weight of the plane's on it).
You'd think that Honda would find a way to make the levers different enough. Or that car companies would all put the lever in the same place. When I was in LA filling up a rental car near the airport I was trying to figure out how to open the filler door. A homeless guy told me where the lever was. Apparently that's kind of his job, hustling for tips by doing this.

Come on.
First of all in 3 years ownership....this is the first and only time I made this mistake.
Secondly....
The damn gas cap release and hood release are not only one on top of each other, BUT you reach down in a often hard to view area. And if you happen to just automatically grab the wrong one? They both feel the same when you pull them.

I live in Oregon, which has attendant only gas service, so I'm pretty sure what happened was I was in a hurry to release the gas cover, before the attendant started pawing at it, so I quickly reached down and pulled, then when the cover wasn't opened just assumed the attendant had knocked it closed, so then re-pulled the correct flap.

I think it's a pretty easy mistake to make. I may fashion just a small, maybe fluorescent sticker so that the hood lever is more readily differentiated from the gas lever.

Then one day you’ll forget which one the fluorescent stick is meant to be and still pull the wrong one. What a pain.
