DIY Guide to Fixing Start Button Issues for all GK5 (2015-2020+) Honda Fit
MAIN ISSUE: Start Button not working (forcing need to press the button repeatedly to start car)
PRIMARY CAUSE: Circuitry inside the start button has debris or corrosion
Hi guys,
After finally tackling the issue I had for a couple of years, I was able to fix the issue of the car not starting up after repeatedly pressing the button numerous times. Here is my DIY guide with pictures!
1) Remove the tachometer shroud by pulling it from the top, toward you. It is just clips that are easy to pull out.
2) Pull on the silver vent cover, starting on the left side, pulling toward you. Work your way toward the right and pull toward you as well. Remove and set aside.
3) The main center vents is stiff if you never removed it before. Pull with some force toward you and the white clips will release. Try shaking it up and down to loosen.
4) Remove the two bolts as shown in the pictures. There are 3 bolts and the next steps will show you how to get the 3rd one (it will be near the driver's side behind the start button).
5) To get to the third bolt in order to remove the radio, get to the panel just over the cupholders and remove the screw listed below. Pull the panel toward you.
6) Pull the panel down, remove the plugs so that you'll have easier access to get to the third bolt holding the radio.
7) You cannot see the third bolt until you do this step. Drop the passenger console (pull inwards on each side, and it'll drop).
8) Looking from the passenger side, there is the bolt you'll need to remove in order to take out the radio. Use a ratching socket with extension (8mm), and try to reach for it from the bottom panel
in step six. Use a flashlight and some flexible arms to get that bolt out from under there.
8a) I had already removed the bolt here, it will be there where the red arrow is pointing at.
9) Once the bolts are out, remove the radio and take out the plugs so you'll have easier access to the start button.
10) Take out the panel on the left side of the start button. All you will have to do is pull it toward you and it will release (only clips).
11) Once the panel is out, you can now reach from both sides of the start button. There are two tabs on the button (can't see here). Just press inwards while pushing out the
start button from behind. You will not be able to remove the white plug from the start button until you push it out first.
12) Once the button is out, remove the white plug (it will be very short with no slack).
13) Clean the button circuitry using the guide below. You will need cleaning alcohol, Q-tips, flathead screwdriver, and pliers.
Now do everything in reverse. Test your start button and make sure the car can start. Voila!
