alternative to Honda oil filters

My first post here so I thought I'd share the only interesting thing I found since buying a Fit a couple months ago...

Time for the first oil change so I Googled looking to see if people were using the Honda oil filters or some other. Got some hits about a change to Honda filters being sold and they were now lower quality (and speculation that they were Fram). I bought a Honda filter anyway so I would have something for comparison. Also went to the auto part store looking for aftermarket alternatives. The aftermarket part numbers looked familiar. They were the same as the '99 Nissan Frontier (2.4L) I used to own. I still had a couple genuine Nissan filters (Nissan part number 15208-9E000). The Nissan filters were much closer to the quality of the factory Honda filter I removed than the replacement Honda filter. The Nissan filters I had are old (about 4 years) so Nissan may have also changed since I bought these.

Back when I still had the Nissan, I remember posts in Nissan forums saying people were using the Nissan filters on non Nissan vehicles because of their quality.

I would if I wanted to spend $16 on an oil filter. I haven't warmed up to the idea of Amsoil once per year oil changes quite yet so I'm not spending 3x as much on filters.

My Toyota manual says to change the oil at 5,000 miles or 6 months. So I'll probably do the same on the Fit unless the oil life thingy tells me something drastically different. $5 oil filters and conventional oil should be good enough.

Anyway, I just wanted to point out that the Nissan filters are interchangeable with the Honda. I thought it an odd coincidence. They also appear to be the same quality as the factory Honda filter where the Honda replacement filter does not.

I use Mobile1 Synthetic and a Purolator PureOne filter. All I use in my cars.
From what Ive read and heard, Honda OEM filters are one of the worse you can use.

Just to add my .02 cents - I'd suggest supertech filters (yes, you read that right) from walmart.
For 2.96 or whatever, they're a bargain, ST7317 I believe (I think all the big brands follow the same number code, just different alphabetic prefix.) and if you don't believe me, pick one up, take a hack saw to it, along with your OEM honda one if it's your first change, or whatever other filter you may be using, and compare them. You'll find them more similar, maybe even better, then you think... I'm no expert though, just visually the supertechs look well designed and solid - way better then fram's crap for half the price, and a value over OEM replacement price as well from the dealer, that does the job better, IMO.
I have yet to see any troubles from them, and there are other threads vouching for them as well - so why not give it a try? I had them in my 91 explorer, and pushing 200,xxx mi., the car still runs despite it's namesake. anyway, they're saving me a couple bucks every time I change the oil, and that'll add up someday.
Just my opinion... and mobil 1 full syn. pairs nicely too

Purolator Pure One. Purolator is contracted to make lots of OEM filters, and Honda is one of them.

I've used most of the filter brands found in the auto parts stores- Fram, Wix, AC Delco, Napa, Motorcraft, Lee, Purolator, K&N, Mobil1, etc. I can't say I've ever had a problem or noticed any change in my vehicle operation using any of them. I started using OEM filters with my Nissan because they seemed good quality and were available for about the same as the aftermarket filters. The Toyota filters I use in my Scion were cheaper than most aftermarket.

Still not sure what I'm going to do for the Fit. Right now it's got a Nissan filter and Castrol GTX 5w-20 (it was on sale).

+1 FTW! HAMP oil filters are jam up and I use them on both my Integra and my FIT. You can get them on some aftermarket websites or eBay.
