Few engine mod questions. One is really dumb.

Morning all! Few questions.
1: The air intake. Is there a good and easy way to mod the existing system to get better power/mpg? I know in the 2000 dodge neon, all you needed was to take out this box in front of the wheel. I do NOT really want to spend money on a new intake.
2: The air intake. What the deuce is that bulb thing right before the filter? Pressure regulator? (think water systems air hammer)
3: Seriously. Where are the sparkplugs?? I searched for them one day, and just can't seem to figure out where they are............................yeah, seriously, am I missing something here?
4: Any cheap ways to get power out of the engine. Any hidden bits of weight to toss, or something? I'll be doing some carbon fiber parts later, but it's hard to find easy to reverse engineer parts!
5: the air scoops next to the foglamps. Do they serve a purpose? Can I use them to route air into the enginearea?
6: engine heat. has anyone taken out the top gasket on the hood to have air flow through the engine bay easier? I almost want to make an airscoop out of carbon fiber for the hell of it anyway.

ps: 2008 Fit, Blue. The fast color.

Lotta good questions. Here are the answers:

Morning all! Few questions.
1: The air intake. Is there a good and easy way to mod the existing system to get better power/mpg? I know in the 2000 dodge neon, all you needed was to take out this box in front of the wheel. I do NOT really want to spend money on a new intake.

There are no extra mods u can do to the OEM air box. All the sound resonating parts (like u mentioned for ur 2000 dodge neon) are under the engine, there are no extra pieces in the bumper area. I have tried to modify the oem airbox and it did nothing but lose me power so don't even attempt it. The best thing u can do is drop in a K&N filter to help it breathe better.

2: The air intake. What the deuce is that bulb thing right before the filter? Pressure regulator? (think water systems air hammer)

That is to control the sound of the intake. It's a chamber there to slow down the rate of air going in so it doesn't make a lotta sound. There is another one right underneath that as well.

3: Seriously. Where are the sparkplugs?? I searched for them one day, and just can't seem to figure out where they are............................yeah, seriously, am I missing something here?

Spark plugs are located BEHIND the plastic engien cover. If u go to the back of the engine (right above the header heat shield) u will see 4 square boxes held in place by a 10mm bolt. Those are teh coil packs. Remove those and ur spark plugs are there.

4: Any cheap ways to get power out of the engine. Any hidden bits of weight to toss, or something? I'll be doing some carbon fiber parts later, but it's hard to find easy to reverse engineer parts!

Not really. What u might want to do is get an Engine Torque Damper by Ingalls to help transfer the torque to the wheels rather let it be lost by engine movement. If u want power, u will need bolt on performance (intake, exhaust, headers, etc..)

5: the air scoops next to the foglamps. Do they serve a purpose? Can I use them to route air into the enginearea?

Actually, the one on the drivers side is already routed up towards the fender well right behind the drivers side headlight where the air is being sucked in by the intake. Just make sure don't block this port with a license plate relocation as i've seen many ppl on the forum block it.

6: engine heat. has anyone taken out the top gasket on the hood to have air flow through the engine bay easier? I almost want to make an airscoop out of carbon fiber for the hell of it anyway.

What u could do is use some hood spacers to create a gap at the back of the hood to help the hot air escape and the cool air to come in. That way u won't have to remove the gasket. The gasket is also there to reduce the movement of the hood and not let it rattle against the hood latch.

1, 2: Thank you very much for that info! Figured as much, but had to ask!
3: AH! Coils on the plugs. Brilliant I think. Explains why I thought I was looking at 2 different injector locations. But the engine was hot so I didn't want to poke around TOO much.
4, 5, 6: Thank you again for that info! Ideas should start flowing
