30k "major service"

hi all its been a while since i visited these forums, glad to be back.

so im closing in on 30k and my local honda dealership says its going to cost 350 + tax and fees. obviously thats a lot of money to me and im quite sure they are siphoning more dough than the work required.

my question is would i be safe with an oil change and AT fluid change or go with the major service package? i was thinking an independant shop and go with their major package, which im sure is much cheaper, but probably not "honda certified" parts and whatnot. thanks

I have always found it best to let the dealership do those type of services but as long as you have a list of the recommended services, drop by your local garage and see how much they would charge compaired to the dealership. If you trust them, it might be OK but I find that having the dealership who works on Hondas all the time are the ones that often can do the work without causing much damage.

I would go by the maintenance minder if you aren't driving your card very hard. Even under "severe" conditions honda recommends changing the ATF at 60k then every 30k afterward.

At 30k maybe air filter and cabin air filter, oil change and tire rotation due. Any symbols next to your oil life?

ive been a honda tech for over 5 years and i just want to tell you guys these 30k, 60k, 90k services are bs. you are throwing your money away for simple services. they do NOT inspect all those things that they say they do. they only check the quick money maker shit and come up with flushes that are not at all needed. if you are mechanically inclined which i know most of you guys are get a list of what is done in these 30, 60, 90k services, and get the parts you need for the things that say replace and do the inspecting yourself.

Thank you for confirming what I've thought since 99.
I am glad to know that I wasn't a skeptic for no reason.
I never did any of these services on any of my Hondas and they all lasted...
90K (99 Civic), 86K (03 Civic Si), 56K (06 Civic) before being traded. Zero problems out of any of them.
Only oil and filter changed regularly.

I know these aren't like super stellar miles, but these cars were traded to dealerships where they were resold.
I later met the next owner of my 03 Si...he was still rolling in it.

I always do my own wrench turning since getting screwed around the one time I took a car into a dealership..... You get screwed enough when you purchase the car, but they will just keep sticking it to you if you give them the chance.

Tex is right! I do everything on my cars and the last place I would take it to is the dealer. They are there for one reason and thats how much they can pull out of your bank account. If you don't have a mechanic or shop owner that you do your "trusted " business with find one. If your not mechanicaly inclined befriend one
1. oil change with Amsoil 5/20 and a Wix filter my cost 40.00
2. transmision drain with 3.5 qts amsoil my cost 32.00
3. replace the intake and get a short ram air intake 45.00 Ebay increases MPG and cool sound under the hood + 5-7 hp to boot!
4. small 3 ton aluminum jack 60.00 from Harbor Frieght with coupon from Auto Week
5. all this took 2.5 hours
6. grand total 177.00 that will leave ya with 173.00 saved and better lubricates than the dealer uses = even better MPG and longer drivetrain life

I grew up working on mustangs, TR6, charger, and I tell ya Tom the Fit is like working on a model car it's soo small. Oil and trans is a real peice of cake to do and will make ya more confident to do something a little more the next time. Your preseption today, will become your reality tomorrow.
Good Luck..............................................

Remember our little engines have to work alot harder than the V8's we use to drive so it's even more important to use the best lubricants on the market and change regularly!!

I took the Fit in today to get the mileage calculator software update. After the work (free), I looked at the service check sheet, which showed tire pressures 33/33. Since I run 38F 35R, I checked the tire pressures this evening and guess what -- they were unchanged. So much for check sheets.

There is an extensive thread on the accuracy of the Fit https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/2nd-...indicator.html. A Technical Service Bulletin was released in November (?) that corrects the error. Not needed for 2010 models. If this is a problem for you, print out the TSB and take it to your dealer for a free update.

tom: unless you live in a mountainous area and only drive in the city, there is NO WAY your fit's maintenance minder is going to suggest changing your a/t fluid.

you dont need to listen to the dealer for service...LISTEN to your FIT. it TELLS you what to do and WHEN. and i would bet money that when your fit turns 30k, (if it hasn't already) a bunch of serivce minders are not going to pop up...honda put that system in place for a REASON and its to take the guesswork out of maintenance and to not let dealers rip you off.

you dont need a 'major' service until you reach 100k with your fit. (and thats per honda. they know your fit better than the dealer does.)
