Rattling Coke Can with BB's

Hey all,

I have lurked this forum for about 2 years and have found all the questions to my answers but I have finally hit a wall. Recently My 07 Fit Sport Auto has started making what I can only describe as a horrible rattling sound when it approaches 4k rpms and shifts like a steroid 18wheeler on crack. I am really good at figuring things out but this ones got me. My only other VTEC experience is with the B16A and that's easy sauce to diagnose. Any insight or further questions you have into my quandry would be irreproachably appreciated.

Cheers!

Maybe tranny issue, problems with the trow out bearing.
Or a potential start to axle problems...........................

I'd look carefully at the exhaust system heat shields (especially around the catalytic converter). These can rust and crack at one mounting point...then rattle.

If you find a broken one, you could

A. remove the heat shield (just don't idle the engine over dry grass)

or

B. used a long hose clamp (buy at Home Depot or similar) to clamp the shield on tight, and stop the rattle.

++++++++++++++

If you are actually having shifting problems look to motor mounts...

Maybe it's too late, but did anyone ever figure this out for sure?

I have an 07 Fit sport manual, and I have a rattle right at the vtec engagement point as well, 3300-3500 rpms. Before and after you don't hear it.

Our '07 had a BUZZ or rattle from a loose metal "grommet" on the heat shield behind the engine. The grommet resembles a steel-wool doughnut.

To tighten it, we removed the heat shield (not too difficult, as the car was only a year or so old) and glued the grommet (and the two others) onto the shield with high temperature RTV. It's been fine ever since (50K miles, 3 years).

Plug this part number into any of the online Honda dealer's sites

74601-SLN-A10

That is the entire shield...list price is ~$25 USD, not too expensive.

I would check exhaust in this as well. Sounds like a loose connection some where to me.
