2007 Fit A/C work

Question for the board. My 2007 Fit's A/C recently stopped working. I took it into a shop and they confirmed the that compressor had died, and also mentioned that the condenser is in poor shape (not surprising after 7 Chicago winters).

They quoted me $1500-$1600 to fix it, does that sound right? I ask because I just moved to a new city and so don't "know" any mechanics. This is a local one that specializes in Japanese cars and has good reviews on Yelp, but I want to make sure I don't get taken to the cleaners. I'm also debating whether its worth sinking that much into a 7 year old car....

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

Nick

Ebay has sanden aftermarket compressors, new for $150. and a new condenser $60. Free shipping. I think you are being taken! $400-600 parts and labor would be more then reasonable price to pay.

Dude you were smart to come in here to ask this question...that is rape and more rape.

My condenser fan took a poop resulting in a compressor overworking and then dying. Check your condenser fan see if it is spinning fast and not slow.

Ok now I have a mechanic that does work that I don't do myself on my car and me working in parts I got the parts myself for my GD3. I called LKQ (network of junkyards) and got a aftermarket condenser fan. Both parts for me were $157 with a year warranty. My mechanic charged me $120 for the labor.

What I can do for you is that I have All Data at work I can look up what the labor time is for that repair. It can't be that much man, so let me help you out brah.

Se if they will let you supply the parts. Then go get them after market. If the compressor has had a catastrophic failure then the system will need to be flushed to get all of the metal shavings out. If you are going to replace the condenser ,and compressor then all the needs flushing is the evaporator and the hoses. You always replace the drier (they are cheap) and replace the orfice tube (also cheap) if there is one on a Honda FIT. I have worked on lots of automotive AC systems but never had a broken compressor on a Honda Fit.

So you will need
Compressor
condenser ?? maybe
drier
orfiice tube
Compressor oil.
2 cans of R-134 - on sale at Menards for $4.88 or not on sale at Menards or Walmart for less than $7.00 each

The repair place should supply the R-134, and they have it is a 30 pound container. The last container I bought was around $4.00 a pound and you will take less than 2 pounds. The should also supply the compressor oil and a few o-rings. Their cost will be around $5.00

Labor including vacuuming and charging I guessing around 2.5 hours. Of course you get to spend some additional money on taxes (especially in Chicago).

Do not be in too big of a rush to fix it. The AC season is over with. You have time to go pricing shop labor and to find the cheaper parts on ebay, Amazon, etc.
