What is this piece hanging under my car?

Bummer. Just noticed this..

What is it? I'm assuming it's something to do with exhaust system.

Thanks.

catalytic converter heat shield

In much of the US, this is not a good time to have the heat shield out of place, as it is there to keep you from igniting a pile of leaves if you park in them. If you are handy, you could unbend a wire hanger and wire the shield roughly back in place until you can get to a shop.

Thanks. I don't have jack stands to try to fix myself so think I'll just drive over to dealer now. Hopefully it's an inexpensive fix.

Dealer wants $250 to replace it. $150 for part and another 100 for labor, which seems high. Anyone know where I can find the part number? I'm googling and keeping coming up with the 2008 shield but my car is a 2007. Is is the same part? If so, looks like it's only about $30.

Any online dealer parts catalog. Many dealers sell at wholesale prices online.

Random 07 Fit picked to get a picture:

2 heat shield halves #5 and 6,
$20 and $25 plus shipping from Majestic Honda
Need the bolts too, or do you have some?

Catalog page link: http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/
(Start at the beginning and select your own car, don't use the catalog page in the link above-- it may not match your car)

If the shields rusted apart like that, you will want new bolts too. They may not want to come out either, due to rust. Many of the cars I do this to need the bolts cut out, heated, chiseled, etc. They fight all the way.

I've ripped those heat shields totally off on most of my cars that have them (after they rust or rattle).

Never had a problem with burning leaves.

Inevitably, one or two mounting points will need to be cut or ground off. PITA.

I had Exactly the same problem, it made metally rattly sound I only heard it when I was idling. It was totally rusty and it held only on 1 mounting spot from 4. I've ripped these heat shield totally off, and have no problem at all.
