Thanks carlosalicea! I think that this is the best bang for the back at $130! Injen is nice, but not it's price.
As gettinafit suggested, additional protection to flexible tubing piece is a good advice. My red harmonica is actualy made out of metal and just a bit morer durable than plastic one. Still, I bent metal opening behind the headlight with pliers wrapped up in a rag to give it more clearance and prevent sharp metal from cuting into tubbing.
KnifeEdge 2K1 is also absolutely correct about negative pressure and intake ability to draw water in from way below the car! On the Fit I did not experience it since filter is quite a bit higher than in my CRX for example.
Damage can be very extensive and expensive! I had it happen few times on my CRX in late 80's early 90's. Fortunately I already eliminated cat from the car. Oxigen sensor tip broke off causing check engine light. You can immagine it going from glowing red hot to being hit with a cold water! Piston rings can crack as well on some cars. Not on my CRX though! I did complete engine overhaul 2 years ago and found no problems beside regular wear and tear after 180K miles! Long live RED LINE OIL! Trust me, I was a mechanic for years!
Did any of you guys check air temperatures with different intake set up's?
I am using scangauge to monitor intake air temperature directly from intake tube OEM sensor and simple $5 external temperature sensor that I keep moving throughout engine compartment, inside fenders and front bumper cavity. I calibrated my $5 cheapy by placing it next to OEM sensor overnight. They were both at 60F following morning.
Then I started driving. Underhood temperature went over 130F and my cheapy blanked out of range! That is what shorty's suck with cone filters in the engine compartments. Somebody mentioned that air circulation there is better than what people might think. I admit it fluctuates, but at what rate! In one word - disaster!
Then I positioned my cheapy next to filter cone in my fender. In stop and go traffic at 60F ambient temperature, intake air fluctuated from 65F to 85F depending on how long I was stuck on stop lights. At 75F ambient it fluctuated from 80F to 90F. OEM sensor must be getting additional few digres heat transver too. So there is exponential increase in intake air temperature in relation to increase in ambient temperature. In one word - better. CAI is clearly better way to go, but there is stil room for improvement. On dyno they just put a vehicle in second gear and accelerate. That does not give accurate comparason between intakes types. During throtle blips while in gear for example while autocrossing or in canyons. Shorty design slows the speed of air in intake during blips. CAI keeps some of that speed and I personaly find that an advantage for my driving style.
My intake set up is not final by any means and as soon as I get my weekends back I will start working on something all of you will like for sure!
In late 80's there was not much to buy aftermarket. I made many things myself that are stil on my CRX today. I miss that. Buying and bolting thigs on is not fun at all for me.
There were no forums for us to exchange ideas and experiences either back then.
Guys, thank you all for participating in information wealth exchange on FITFREAK.NET and to whomever started this site on the first place!
