Anyone know of anything that plays OGG format?
Hey all,
I would like to replace our HU with something that would play Ogg Vorbis formatted music. It's easy to find MP3 stuff, but half my music library is in ogg format (better compress and audio quality than MP3). Trick is, it's hard as hell to find.
If I understand, "single-DIN" is you standard HU size and "double-DIN" is the bigger size for screens, right? I'd be happy with either, as the former is more affordable and the later just kicks ass. I'd love to find a unit that I could tie in the steering wheel controls that was mentioned in another thread (but didn't work for the stock HU).
I am not one for flashy, when I have a choice. Part of what I loved about the OEM HU was how spartan and clean looking. I'm not too interested in fancy VUs and such.
Thanks all!

I only found one receiver capable of playing it, but I probably wouldn't buy it. I'd say your best bet is too just play your OGG's off a portable player into the auxiliary input of a nice receiver. Anyways, here is the link to the one I found. It's not real apparent that it plays OGG's but it's in the manual.

maybe not the best answer, but i got this JVC
JVC KD-DV5300 - iPod ready DVD/VCD/CD/MP3 Player with Remote and CD changer control • RMS Power Handling: 20 watts x 4 channels • MOS-FET Power Amp • iPod ready • SAT Radio Ready • DivX Compatible • DTS/Dolby Digital/MPEG Audio - , In-Dash Head Units
It doesn't play ogg, but it can play a dvd full of wav files,
so any unsupported format can be converted back to wav
with no additional conversion loss.
peace

It's pretty rare to find an .ogg player. My best suggestion would be to change all your .ogg files to .mp3 files. there's a site that i found on google.com a while back that changes ANY file type to ANY other file type. it will take a while though since you change one file at a time. you might be able to find a program on download.com that changes them all at once.
another suggestion is building yourself a carputer and running VLC media player. that will play anything out there.

Chase,
Yeah, doesn't look so hot. :/
Phat and Dead,
I know I could convert to MP3/WAV, but that defeats the purpose.
I would never convert from a lossy to lossy format, as the results sound like crap. Going back up from lossy to wav isn't such a help either as even on a DVD I wouldn't be able to get close to my library on it. My hope was a DVD or, better, a miniHDD system so I could load it all on (some ~1,500 tracks, plus my b/f's stuff). Ogg is simply the best sounding lossy file format, so I will keep looking.
I may go the carputer route, as I have a Via EPIA M10000 mobo from an old project already. I found this page of a Gentoo build (though I prefer Debian, but it should be easy enough to convert it). I've also got an old PCI 802.11b card kicking around, so if I can dig up a riser card I will be that much closer.
Well, the carputer *would* be more fun, but I had hoped to support a company that in turn supported OGG. *sigh*
Thanks again guys!

it's a compromise every time. you know how companies are. they won't push out a product (i.e. ogg format player) unless it's "hot" or "popular". everything's mp3 these days cuz of Ipods and Zens and etc. good luck with the carputer. someone in the forum i think has built one but you'll have to search for the thread again. i think it was under the Fit ICE.
