Generic Subs / AMP !??!?
Generic Subs / AMP !??!?
alright soo i saw a co worker who also drives a fit he paid 260.00 for a JL generic sub / amp + installs.... it sounds pretty good also for a imitation.... but i was wondering is there any potential problems with it?.... why is it soo cheap yet it sounds pretty good?... just curious on the problems it might cause.... anybody have comments on this subject?
When it comes to subs and amps, your going to get what you pay for. The cheaper model stuff (in my experience anyway) tend to fail more often. Amps will overheat and once you over heat a cheap amp, there is really nothing you can do. It will usual have a complete failure soon after. Cheap subs are very easily blown as the voice coils are garbage. If you take care of them though, put the amp in a location with plenty of airflow and not in direct sunlight and not listen to it at very loud volumes, you should get some good use out of it.
the issue mainly is very low quality construction. The components in cheapo amps are not anywhere near top knotch. ex 20% tolerance resistors, 10% tolerance caps, performance from 1 amp of the same model to the other can vary drastically. (like Rockford Fosgate Punch series amps. their "birthsheets" vary by up to 15%.)
So it leaves them more prone to failure, more prone to distortion, etc. etc.
For cheapo subs, well same issues. Poor quality constuction. Even entry level subs from some major brand names are like this as well. They literally just slap them together on a production line. VC alignment isn't always that great, Materials are whatever costs the least. Cones are usually too thin and prone to flexing (VERY audible disortion) and generally sound like crap.
