it helps with saving weight and gives a lot of clearance when grinding so it doesnt get tagged on a ledge or something

^^Thats the logic behind it. The only draw back is that you break chains a lot easier.

I bought the axle holders from the local bike shop. Most bike shops should have them.

if you put the back seats in "tall mode" you can fit 2 bmx bikes right there without taking the wheels off.

That picture with the mountain bikes is misleading. They are either 24", womens xs frames, or the front seats are almost all the way forward on the rails.

I ride bmx, road, and mtb, usually have some kind of bike in my car 4 or 5 days a week. I can tell you for sure that your mount method would only work on a mtb or road bike if the handlebars were turned 180* and the frame was no bigger than a large. I have a very similar mount, except the fork mount is in the back of the car, and with the handlebars on the mtb 1-2" from the rear glass, the rear tire is in between the front seats a good bit.

I don't like hitch racks or roof racks and I prefer the idea of the fork being secured to the Fit's "deck".

I wish that design could work for an adult sized road bike. But there is not enough room. I know, I've tried many times. You need something more like a real minivan to do that.

Beautiful! I have scratched my interior plastics a little bit putting my bike in the back. I have been frustrated thinking of how to gently get my bike in and out of the car.

This is a great idea!

When we are traveling without bikes we just lift the bike rack out. It works great! What do your think?
i love your design! i have been looking for days cause i couldnt get past having a hitch or a roof rack. i have been putting two mountain bikes in the back and just lay them down while they lean against the door or the window. problem is, they scratch the ish out of everything and my tint is messed up.

where do you i get those things where you screwed into the board? brilliant design!

this is awesome!
i was debating over the hitch and the roof for 2 weeks.
the cons are killing me and i have been leaning it inside the car where it has been tearing up the interior and messing up the tint.

with your design, i can stand them and strap the back down.
thank you!

Thanks! The bike rack clamps are available at most bike shops. It makes it nice that you don't have to adjust your driving style because of the bikes in the back. When the bikes are clamped down they can't move so you can

first off, thanks to TFB for posting his DIY bike rack. inspired me to go out and do it

i didnt use carpet to wrap the entire rack because i dont have garage storage space right now so there will be times where i will be storing the rack outside.

i varnished mine with a dark cherry wood color

i also mounted the rack holders tilted as i have a 16"db and a 14"db and the bars hit when it was mounted straight.

in the back, i used a bungee cord to hold the front tires together. it goes from the side catcher over the back of the mtb and into the spokes back over the other back mtb tire and then to the other catcher.

i ordered the all season floor mats and the all season cary tray mat to keep a nice clean look like TFB's

here are some pics

Is there a reason that something like this wouldn't work on the 09's?

https://www.fitfreak.net/gallery/dis...lbum=383&pos=0

This looks like a good idea, 2 bikes in, with the ability to leave small rear set up if needed.

I don't have my car yet, so not sure if this config would make sense.

Nice Job! I'm glad to see you were able to fit two mountain bikes. The mounts on my rack are mounted a couple inches offset so the bars won't hit. Tilting the mounts was a good idea.
