Newbie installing HU for first time

New to the forums here, have found some great information that's helped me along the way with my '08 Fit. This weekend I hope to successfully replace the factory radio and was looking for any last minute advice before I start into the project. Here's what I've gathered for parts:

New Pioneer FH-p8000bt

Scosche Dash kit
Wiring harness
Antenna Adapter

I've got it all together and everything looks good to go. I've done as much research as I think I can to make sure I know how to get the dash off and what not.

If there's any advise or tips anyone might have to aid my efforts this weekend I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

VK

Take great care and be sure that you retain all of the metal clippy things that hold the factory radio surround into the dash. The replacement pieces are fabulously reliable for not fitting well and those clips are pretty important to getting the damned thing to sit right. Take your time and don't rush, remember that the plastic of the dash gets scratched easily and once done it can't be un-done. Good luck and welcome to the boards!

I have installed a few different double din HU's in various cars and if there is one thing i can suggest is to take your time, both with the install and the wiring harness. If you know how to solder, i would solder and shrink wrap the wires instead of using crimp connectors. There will be less chance of something coming disconnected in the future. Other than that, its a fairly easy install and nothing out of the ordinary to expect.

Last weekend i installed the pioneer Z110bt in my 2010 fit and love it. Not as big of a improvement in sound quality as i have noticed in other cars, but still a noticeable difference.

Good luck!

Thank you for the input. I've been going back over my information I've collected and I'm trying to understand if there is a secret to detaching the console piece, specifically the clips. Is it just some simple prying (CAREFULLY) that's going to do it?

This is where I've found the info:

Yes, if you have a skinny flat head screw driver no more than 4mm or 5mm there is a small opening on the side of the stereo that can only be accessed by opening the upper glove box. Stick the screw driver in that opening and use it as a lever to 'pop' it up. Once you have popped one clip out you should be able to get your fingers underneath it and pull. The clips are designed to be able to be pulled out multiple times so don't worry too much about breaking the clips. Obviously if it doesn't seem to be coming with a decent amount of effort you might have to try a different approach. It worked on mine and was really not to difficult after you know how it goes together.

Another hint is to look at your aftermarket kit for where the clips are so you know where to pull.

Again, thanks for the tips and tricks so far.

I'm wondering, the auxiliary input that is on the center console by the cup-holders...

Does it "plug" into the back of the factory headunit or is it wired in? I ask this because my replacement radio has an auxiliary on that back of it. Wonder if it's going to be possible to keep the convenience of that front plug with the new unit....

I am sorry, but i just realized you have been talking about a 08. I am not sure how the 08's are put together... So coming from someone that hasn't take a 1st gen apart, i would look at the kit and see where the clips and screw holes are. Not sure about the aux plug. Without seeing it, i would guess that it would loose its ability to work, unless you were able to in someway connect it.

Install completed...sorta....

So I was successful in my new HU installation this weekend. Was a little difficult at first, but once I got the center to pop out removing the old console and replacing it with and putting in the new HU wasn't bad at all.

Here's the final outcome:

Thanks, it's sounds SO MUCH BETTER than that POS factory radio. Even with the stock speakers it's improved by at least 10 times, with way more power.

I did find this morning I must have missed something. The AM radio signal comes in really weak, I think I left the blue wire on the antenna adapter off. Not sure where it's supposed to hook up at, gonna have to pull it off and look at it.

Now all I need is an amp, sub, new door speakers and I'll be good to go!
