TCS steering spacer installation.... Tall guys, Track guys, GD owners....LOOK!
What: 2.5" steering spacer from Tailored Chassis Solutions
Why: maybe your tall, have freakishly short arms, or just aren't comfortable
How long: half hour if your inept or drinking heavily
Car: 07 Fit sport... YMMV
Here is a brief description of the installation process for the TCS steering spacer that I recently installed in my SpecFit thread in the Racing forum.
I needed this to get comfortable and give me room for heel-toe braking/shifting.
For me, it was an absolute must.
So I approached a fabricator and fellow Fit racer, Seamus at Tailored Chassis Solutions, and asked him to make me a 2.5" steering spacer for the light/comfortable/strong factory steering wheel so I could retain the safety and comfort equipment. I ain't giving up cruise control, blinking lights annoy me, and my wife drives this car regularly.
In between his busy race schedule, he found time to create this thing of beauty.
Lets back up....
First, disconnect your battery, airbags are not to be tested!
Grab a T30 bit and a short extension...
Remove the two screws securing the airbag/horn assy.
Gently lift the assy from the wheel a bit... reach behind and undo the black horn and yellow air bag connectors.
Don't just pull, disconnect the airbag harness by pressing down this black slider before pulling apart.
Finally, unclip the main harness, loosen the center hub bolt a few turns but don't remove! Reach behind the wheel and alternate slapping it on both sides. The bolt keeps it from hitting you in the face or yanking on wires.
Remove this, we won't be using it. This is just a wire keeper and while were on the subject of wires.... This 2.5" extension is the absolute max you can go without having to cut and extend the harness! I recommend the 2" version if you want to be on the safe side. Extending the harness is a huge PITA.
Slide on spacer and cover if you ordered one and reinstall center bolt.
Time to bolt up your wheel using quality hardware and get creative to plug in the harness. I used hemostats.
Route the airbag wires the same as factory and connect. Install the horn connector and drop in the airbag.
Reinstall the screws.
Enjoy, maybe get and alignment unless your lucky and its perfect.

Here is the real benefits

Its easiest to contact Tailored Chassis Solutions via FaceBook for a custom length spacer of your own.
Cheers..

Wow! That has been my number one complaint with the Fit since we bought it in '08! Wife didn't mind it so we signed the papers, but I would have paid an extra grand to have the wheel telescopic.
I'm thinking the 2" version for ours since any change will be appreciated and it's just a street car.
Did TCS also supply the cover? If not, what/where do you recommend for the cover?
Thanks for the great write up!

It would be even more visually subtle, offer a huge improvement in comfort, and make certain aspects of the installation even easier!
I got this Boss Kit off eBay for $10 shipped.
Removed this one piece a threw everything else in the trash.
Then asked Seamus to machine the spacers mounting collar to 3.2" diameter and its a perfect fit and looks reasonably O.E.....

Interesting... I've given serious thought to spending a day in the junk yard trying to retrofit a Civic or RSX telescopic column but this might do the trick instead! Are they going up for sale anytime soon or should I plan on fabbing my own?

Seamus at TCS runs a busy race-prep shop and a full competition schedule; but, he's happy to make more of these... in custom lengths to driver preference.
He has the skills and machinery required to water-jet, jig, and weld these up with repeatable accuracy. Its an important piece and not something I would trust myself to tackle.
Check out their FaceBook page for more cool Fit racing related stuff and contact info.
