Im posting here, hoping to get some insight into a problem ive had for a few days now. I'll also post some pics asap to describe what im on about.

I've posted here previously about the new alloys i got, asking whether they would fit (https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/fit-...these-fit.html) and atm they are looking good with 195/55/16 tires . but as the title suggests i have a problem with rubbing now.

Both front alloys are fine, the rear passengers side experiences to odd rub but the rear drivers side is horrible. No matter if i got over road humps or turn i get a horrible rubbing noise thats very loud (makes me cringe ).

so i guessed it was due to a previous accident that was described vaguely as "tailgate damage".

So what did i do? i took out the rear alloys and found out that the wheel arch mouldings have rubbed so much at the rear center that i can see the steel behind it.

A friend of mine said it might be the shocks as it happens more often over road humps.

So what do you guys think it is? you think the shocks are knackered? how could i check this? what else could i check for?

I'm going back to the ugly hub caps i've got so ill post some pics tomorrow.

take a few shots of wat you're talking about so that it's more clear.

 

New wheels are TOO BIG for your car. It's not the shocks it's the BIG/WIDE wheels. The wheel wells are of different sizes on the Jazz/Fit side to side hence the wear on one side only. Go to a smaller less wide wheel.

 

hi claymore thanks for your advice. are the fit/jazz wheel wells really that different from each other? how much so?

as promised ive taken some pictures of the wells. i took these when i was taking the alloys off so that i could use the ugly steels i originaly have.

so are you saying that the area you circled are the areas that you think
the tire is rubbing?

im lost in your explanation...

where on the tire do you see the rubbage? inside or outside sidewall or
on the treads?

sorry i didnt write any explanations to these images.

what i was trying to get at in the image with two circles was that the smaller circle on the right i where i think the rubbing occures, while the longer oval is where i recon the apparent "tailgate damage" was.

i had a look at the tires as well and i didnt notice any sort of wear on them. which i thought was very odd.

if you have a look at the two first pictures with the actual alloy on, it looks as though theres abit more space between the tire and the arch on the passenger side compared to the drivers side

 

195/55/16 This is to big ! 5% to big...
The tire diametre is a full inch bigger
than the stock size...

Look at the pic, there is a spot that
rub when using the wrong size tire...

If it rubs anywhere else, something
is bent or not installed correctly (fender
liner, etc.)

Again, look inside the fender, at the
bumper and 1/4 panel junction (spel???)

hi philippe, thanks for your reply.

i dont think its there thats rubbing as ive had a closer look at it and its just a missalignment of the bumper. the guy that repaired the damage did a really bad job of the repair.

but i will probably try different tires. what size tires should i be looking for these alloys?

 

205 45 R16 is the perfect match at -0,7% from stock
and 195 50 R16 is not so far by -1% from stock

For the HFP wheels, Honda recomend 205 45...

thanks for your reply. ive been doing my research and came up with the same conclusion. i was thinking of being on the safe side and go for 195/45R16 or even 195/40R16... but getting tires with those specs will be abit expensive...

anyways im gonna enquire about them at my local kwik fit and see if i can go for a quick test drive in them before i comit to buying

That rubbing doesn't look bad at all. That inner panel is just plastic to prevent road water from being thrown against the inside of the wheel. So if you keep driving eventually that plastic will get worn away and the rubbing will stop. As long as there are no spots where there is metal rubbing against the tire you should be OK and rubbing on plastic wears away the liner NOT the tire. On another subject that "damage repair" well lets put it kindly and say I hope they didn't charge to much for their "repairs" and sheet metal screws are not part of standard Honda parts.....

 

it may not look bad but it sounds terrible! the sound is akin to that classic teacher running her nails on a chalk board. and for those who love their car, you just never want to hear it again

im gonna try and get the tires exchanged for 195/45/16, if the rubbing happens then ill try and capture the sound and post it if i can.
