Curb Rash Repair

When I came home from work earlier this week, I noticed this on the RF wheel of my wife's Fit

So this morning, I cleaned it off so I could see the magnitude of the damage.

The lips on these wheels are stainless steel, so I decided to try Mother's Billet Metal Polish. Because the weather was nice, I decided to work outside. Since I was going to work in the driveway, I used a trick I picked up from my best friend's dad: Keep a couple of pieces of carpet in the garage. They are a lot more comfortable to kneel on than the floor mats. You can get pieces for a few bucks at a capet store. I had extra left over from when my house was built that I cut into squares.

After about 45 minutes of polishing, I was able to get the wheel looking a lot better. This stuff works really well.

You can also sand with progessively finer grit and then use polish, and it will look like nothing ever happened. The only times that doesnt really work is when the rim is colored or has a factory texture or the material loss is such that there is a noticable "dent" or "chunks" (yikes!) missing.

Thanks for the post and congrats on making it look better

good job.

i would probably do 800grit wetsand, 1500grit wet sand followed by 2000grit wet sand
and finish with polish.

i would prolly just rub the whole rim against the curb- that spot will blend right in-- you will never notice the original rash

(do not attempt)

Actually, the owner of the company is a close friend of mine, and sent me a set. The brand name is changing to XXR this year because of trademark conflicts with Dunlop Tires' Sport Maxx line.

You can purchase these wheels from many different retailers, just search the web a bit. The ones on my wife's car are Style 502 in the chromium black finish, 17x7. Each wheel box includes both chrome and black center caps.

Not lowered at all, suspension is stock. Rolling the rear fenders and shaving down the rear mounting tab fixes the rubbing.
