will 17 inch wheels fit on a fit

It's not such a simple question as there are variables. It depends on tire size and rim offset. Searching will bring up lots of threads on this.

^^ Thats pretty much it.
Its been done, but in my opinion its overkill for the GD plus the 205/40R17 tire that is typically used hella thin. For GEs, its not as bad since they typically use 205/45R17s.
GD with 17s.
GE with 17s.

For GD to not rub at stock height with a 205 tire, the lowest recommended offset is +42mm. For lowered, the lowest recommendation is +45mm.
I personally have 205/55R15s mounted on 15x6.5 ET+40mm wheels. In front, I'll barely rub the fender liner when it is untucked with a heavy passenger up front during suspension compression (due to the tire's hieght and the riders laziness) and I barely rub the rear tire's sidewall (lightly touches the ridges/lettering) on moderate bumps/dips at stock hieght.

Wheel diameter size has nothing to do with tires rubbing, its the wheel's offset. The additional 2mm that my wheel and tire sticks out (and tire hieght) does. I only mentioned my setup to use as an example of how tolerant the GD is to certain wheel and tire combos.
All the wheel diameter does is change aspect ratio for the sidewall's thickness; so, the bigger the wheel, the thinner the tire and vice versa. If you want a 205 for a 15" wheel, you need a 205/50R15; for 16"s, 205/45R16 and for 17"s, 205/40R17. All of these can be ran on a GD, its just that you have to find the proper offset to run these without rubbing.
But back on topic and to try to further clarify: The 16x7 HFP wheel for the GD has an offset of +55mm and is commonly ran with a 205/45R16 tire. It will not rub at all due to having such a high offset (sunk into the wheel wells) on a GD that is at stock hieght or lowered.
Now, if you were to put 15mm spacers on the HFP wheel and tire combo will be pushed 15 mm away from the wheel wells, lowering the HFP's offset of +55mm to +40mm. At +40, the 205 tire is sticking out far enough that it can and will rub (if lowered/hit hard bump) on rear bumper tab directly above the tire.
And this goes back to what I said in my previous post...
