When to change stock tires?

2 questions: when do most of you change your stock tires due to wear and tear and when do most of you change your stock tires just because? Thanks!

28k sounds about right. Nice to give in to temptation - go for it.

I'll be changing mine when the treads are down like Evo points out.

I changed mine when I felt they weren't very safe to drive on anymore. Cracking and low tread. I did a lot of mileage out of them though.

the stock ones last about 30k. pretty expensive for econobox tires, too. For my third set, I went with a different size, 205/55 R16 (it was either 50 or 55, cant recall offhand), because the stock size was not available within a reasonable amount of time. Have seen about a 10% drop in mpg.

Well, you really wanna use a quarter to test the depth, if you don't have a tire gauge (free from Discount Tire BTW) The old test was to use a penny, but I guess due to inflation (just kidding), the quarter is now the preferred method and same thing holds true, if you can't see the top of Geo's head, its time to start shopping.

On the other hand, tire noise can make some people change out their tires too. I had a set of BFG KDW2's on my old MINI and they were so loud that even my g/f commented on them.

www.tirerack.com or www.tires.com

Have fun shopping
