Snow Tire: 185/65 - 14 or 175/65 - 14

The tire rack posts the following for a Fit Sport winter tire package on 14's:

Preferred: 175/65 - 14 (outer diameter = 22.95inches)
Alternate: 185/65 - 14 (outer diameter = 23.47inches)

The stockers are 195/55 - 15 (outer diameter = 23.44).

Wouldn't the 185's be the preferred from a diameter matching point of view? The 175s introduce a 2.1% mismatch - within reason but unnecessary. The only reason the 175s might be preferred is from a tire width point of view for snow conditions...

Ideas?

I went with 185/65 - I prefer to keep my speedo accurate. I wouldn't think the slight difference in width on the 175s would make that much of a difference.

For winter use usually the more narrow tire will work better in snow.
Clearance with snow all over the tires will be better with the 175/65-14.

Otherwise for the rest of the year when using the stock 14x5.5" rims-
Tires most used include
175/65-14
185/60-14 outer diameter 22.8" (slightly better selection of performance minded tires Yokohama AVS ES100 and Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS)

185/65-14 will fit but is not as good in selection of available tires except for
BF Goodrich Traction T/A H.

Here in TX we don't have to worry about all this snow tire mombo jumbo.. we can roll on our rims all year long

In Hawaii we don't have snow but we do have alot of rain. All season tires work fine and don't cost as much as some of the Ultra High Performance Summer tires that can handle wet well.

Snow tires aren't useful or practical unless you drive up to high altitude- to one of the observatories at the top of a volcano. Some owners like those snow tires for off road type use and on unpaved surfaces.

Blacknblue lives in Ottawa Canada so snow is a big concern soon.

I'll be running 175/70-14's for winter - Hakkapeliitta 1's that I already have, on steel Civic wheels.

The stock tires on the base (DX/LX) are 175/65R14.

On a rough test last week, using highway mile posts on a 60km span, the odometer trip meter showed 61.5km -- 2.5% high. (Interestingly, the Scangauge (OBDII reader) showed only 1% high.)

I went with 185/65 14. They are closest to stock for the Sport model (0.1%).
