Installing trailer wiring

I need help hooking up the wiring harness for my trailer to my 2016 Fit. Specifically, where do you splice into the various wires? It seems the least intrusive way would be to remove the black fiber cargo area wall covers. Just under the furthest rear windows.
But I'm cautious of prying things off. I don't want to break any tabs. I couldn't find anything on YouTube showing how to remove those wall covers. If I could get in there the wires should be exposed and I could tap into them.
If you remove the rear light assemblies the wires are pretty much sealed and covered with heavy protective sheaths. I didn't want to remove those. Besides, there didn't seem to be much slack there to work with. If I could get into the area where those wires come through the wall I think there would be more room to work.
Thanks in advance.

Plug and play no splicing. Will need to pop the rear trim out to get behind the tail lights. 2015-present with GK. At the time they did not have the plugs, so I splice soldered mine in. Harder than the solution now.

Here is my video with the rear area removed. You can see the green clips. If you break them, easy to replace.

Thank you very much.
Several questions:
- I'm towing a very light trailer with no brakes. Seems I should be able to make all connections (including power) at the rear of the car, so I shouldn't have to run wires up to the front like you did. Agree??
- So...you just pry that black, rug-looking cover material off? This is the part that scares me.
- Would AutoZone have those green clip in case I break them?

I am not sure where you would be tapping a fused 12V power in the rear. Can you tell me where you are planning to tap into?
- to be clear, im talking about powering the trailer light unit, not the 12v auxiliary power that I fused at the battery which is meant to charge the inboard breakaway battery on the trailer. You do not have brakes so that would not be necessary.

- Yes correct you can pry the lining material away. I would remove all the stuff from the trunk area and gently bend it away, and put the seats all the way down forward.
***If you break any of those green clips, it is part# 91560-SZW-003. Not every expensive and easy to get ahold of on amazon or say bernardiparts. Here they are in a bag of 25 pieces.

- You could also check your local auto zone or hardware store for something similar. Dorman is the brand, but I have not gone that route. This link comes to mind but not sure if the size is right. Dorman Assorted Trim Panel Clips

Take your time, if you have plastic trim panel pry tools those are your best friend to prevent damage and gouging the plastic. It can be had at harbor freight for cheap. Keep me posted on your progress. Like I mentioned before you got it real easy with the plug and play. I had to solder it all! Sorta of the pioneer of towing with the GK here on Fitfreak, though many others tow as well.

I don't have the Plug and Play. My wire kit came with folding-type connectors. I hope they work!
Seems I won't need a power wire - I'll just tap into the ones for the tail, brake, and turn lights, correct?
I will go to HF and get those plastic trim panel pry tools.
U-Haul wanted $165 to do this for me.

Thanks for the encouragement. It's been cold and wintery here. As soon as we get a decent weekend I'll be on this.
It shouldn't hurt anything if I get part way through this project then put it on hold for a day or so, should it?
I mean, it should be ok to drive around with those side covers detached, should it?

i dont see a problem with that temporarily. Let me know how you progress. PM me if you need to. Check my 2015 thread, it has the wire color code you need. Not sure which light unit you got though.

Max, now did your install go? What kit did you use? I’m trying to find one that doesn’t require direct hookup to the battery.

They no longer make a non powered unit. You need a powered unit for the GK 3rd gen. The wiring system was not adequately sized to run trailer lights in conjunction with the OEM lights. Running a wire to the battery isn't that difficult, just time consuming when done right.
