Fit Towing Utility Trailer

Hey all!

I own a 2013 Fit Sport and I'm looking to get a bit more utility out of the car. I don't have enough money to have a separate towing vehicle such as a light duty truck. I'm looking for comments/advice on my planned setup. I'm using etrailer.com as my source for most of the parts.

I am in the US and the US version isn't rated to tow anything, but I have seen countless threads of people towing with Fit's without any major issues. Plus in the UK and Europe, those Fit's are rated to tow I think 1000 lbs without trailer brakes and 2000 lbs with brakes. I'm looking at trailers at my local hardware stores (4x8 or 5x8) that would be around maximum 400 lbs. I plan to tow my 2019 Kawasaki z400 on the trailer (350 lbs wet). So around 750lbs of towing weight maximum. I don't plan to tow all the time, just occasionally. Plus I can move things like couches and lazy boy chairs without needing to borrow a buddy's truck. All together since I'm in Alaska totals about $1000 for the hitch, trailer, and accessories. This is quite reasonable as it adds so much utility to the Fit.

Comments, concerns, questions appreciated!
Have a good day

In European models it is actually 992 lbs without brakes and up to 2205 lbs with brakes. I'm sure you'll be doing just fine with Fit and light trailer for your occasional hauling needs. I am towing similar light trailer (5'8x10 weighting 450 lbs empty and rated up to 1650 lbs towing weight) quite often, almost weekly with both GK5 Jazz and other cars and trucks, including smaller and less powerful ones than Fit.

As you are in Alaska, I would strongly suggest to have serious winter tires for the trailer. It is very easy to get the trailer sliding when accelerating after the turn when the trailer is not yet in line with the car. I have once hit a parked car with my trailer when just for a fraction of a second I forgot that I was towing when getting off a junction.
