I have not one, but two of them for over 8 years now! Best money I ever spent on cars! My buddies are borrowing mine every chance they get!I only got 1 ticket on 101 going to LA by Solvang. It was a ticket trap over the crest! Caltrans cleared brush for Highway Patrol to hide in. I was the only car on the road and he let me go by before he tagged me! I did not even know he was there until he triggered his laser! No matter what detector you have you are dead when hit by a laser!
He asked me if I have a radar detector and I acknowledged since they are legal in CA. When I told him I have Valentine1 he told me that I have an awesome piece of equipment and that the only reason he got me is his perfect location and the fact I was the only one there!
This thing has arrows for direction of incoming radar(front, back and both sides), counter and strength meter. You can send them to Valentine for upgrades for as long as you have it. I use it on city mode even on fwy since it alerts me miles before I even reach the threat! It is excellent for places where cops sit and wait with radar off and raise it up and turn it on already aimed at a vehicle, like fwy on ramps along straight like an arrow flat lands of fwy 5 between LA and SF. It is so sensitive that it will detect bounced radar signals around canyon bends on hwy 50 or 80 going to Lake Tahoe! You can find out if trap is ahead when they tag somebody else 5-10miles before you even reach the location!
This thing saved us so many times that it paid itself of in just a few months of service.
Stay away from cordless, battery powered detectors regardless of the brand! I do not care how awesome they might be, but if they are powered by batteries they do not have strength for long range! Also mount them high up on the visor to account for "curvature of the earth" or crests. By the time your dash mounted unit alerts you, it is often too late! Using Valentine "remote" display unit keeps the radar itself invisible to cars behind you since it is not lighting up! Love blasting and braking while that Mustang driver needs to prove his manhood by going by me and collecting that ticket!

I have a Valentine 1 ($400) and a Bel 955 ($270). I prefer the Valentine hands down. The Bel 9500i uses GPS to silence falses, the Valentine 1 has front and rear antennas and directional arrows to give the position of the radar. I prefer the arrows. You purchase Valentines directly from the manufacturer http://www.valentine1.com/ . Valentines also never become obsolete as they are upgradeable and their support is second to none. Although they are not advertised you can call Valentine and purchase "factory refurbished" units at a discount. These are units that have been returned due to their 30 money back gaurantee and have been reinspected, checked, and repackaged like new. I think they sell for $360.

There's two kinds of radar detectors: the Valentine 1 and everything else. I've been using radar detectors since the original Fuzzbuster came out in the late '70's. Nothing I have ever tried comes close to the V1.

Just to add, do you often drive where detectors are illegal (Virginia, Washington DC, some of Canada)? If so the Bel Sti is the only way to go, otherwise I recommend Valentine.
