Hatchback hard to unlock

I did a search but came up zero.
The hatchback on my 2016 is a pain to unlock. In order to unlock it i have to push in on the handle while activating the unlock button on the key. Even then it takes several tries to get the hatchback to unlock.
I'm guessing it needs to be lubed. Maybe it needs sprayed with PB Blaster or something similar? Maybe I need to take the trim off and get in there and clean and lube it. IDK.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The GD has a notorious issue with its handle, it just rusts over the years and becomes more difficult to open and doesn't return by itself. It never really caused issues when unlocking though.

You can see how rusty it is here, I don't think any amount of spraying would help, you would probably have to actually remove the trim and clean and lube it, if that's indeed the problem.

That's what I thought I might have to do. So, it looks like you opened it up from the outside? I haven't really looked closely at it yet.
What is GD?

GD is the code for the first generation Fit/Jazz, I said that because it might work differently on your much newer car.

Here I had to remove the outside panel that's covering the handle, but to do that, I first removed the trim on the inside of the hatc, and then pushed out the clips which were actually holding the panel in place. YMMV

OK thanks. I looked up some youtube videos. It seems like a fairly common problem. I'm going to see about ordering the part, then tearing into it. If the part is too outrageous, considering present economic/availability conditions, I might just tear into it and see about cleaning it up and lubricating it.

Thanks a bunch. Your post gave me courage.

You're welcome, and good luck!

The clips gave some resistance and I had a super rusty bolt holding it in one place but nothing was too difficult. I got the handle from ebay for like $10 so try searching there if there's no other reasonable option. This handle at least could certainly be cleaned up with some effort.

I'm thinking a toothbrush and some cleaner/lube might recondition the old one, but I would hate to get it open and find it needs replacing.

I would say my hatch is a bit finicky on the double click to unlock. There have been a handful of times the rest of the doors unlock but the hatch doesn't. Relock and unlock has solved it. Not sure if it's the actuator or what it is. But it's minor in any case.

I cannot find the part. I went to Rock auto and A1 auto. Anyone know where I can find that part?

Edit. They are available on Amazon and they are cheap! It seems this is a common problem. I'm wondering why more isn't posted about it on this forum. I will post my experiences as they go along.

I'm wondering now how to open the hatch as mine quit working completely. If nothing else I will crawl back there and remove the interior trim/cover.

Last winter I did a lot of driving on dusty gravel roads. The rear end of the car got filthy. I'm wondering if grit from that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Any way to open this hatchback from the inside? It's a 2016 LX. I'm thinking of sticking a piece of shim stock alongside the bar in the middle. Maybe that will pop the latch. If that doesn't work I'm going to pry off the plastic molding.

Little better

Just tore the panel off unscrewed the two ten millimeter botls. Pulled off the wire and pulled the handle as forward as i could. Sprayed with Lube anti rust and gave a scrub with an old tooth brush. Some rust came loose and put it back together. Still not perfect but ALOT easier to push forward to lock the hatch.

My problem is not with the mechanics, it is electrical. I believe, at this point. I've got the plastic door cover off right now. I had the handle loose and it seems free. I had the latch assembly off. I cleaned it with q-tips and put it back together.

Does anyone know if there is a relay that unlocks the hatchback, and if so, where is it? I'm also wondering if there is a fuse that activates the unlatch function in some way. If so, how do I find that fuse?????

Good as new

I pulled the latch out and blasted off some of the rust. Then I covered it in White lithium grease.. Especially on the sides where th plastic and metal slide. It actualy spring back into place when you let go. A pain to get out but worth it. You may not have to take it off in the future as you can squirt the grease on the left and right side. ....Is your latch moving back freely?

It does now. I cleaned it with compressed air then lubed it generously with CLP. Now it works like new.

I replaced the pin with one of slightly smaller diameter. It happened to be chrome plated too. Easy to make one.
