Maximum Length of Interior Storage

I'm trying to figure out if a 9' longboard surfboard would fit into a US Honda Fit. I've heard of people putting an 8'4" board into the vehicle. I'm assuming that the nose of the board is resting on the glass. What's the longest object that anyone has put into a Fit and still be able to drive with the hatch closed?

This won't answer your question, but I always thought it was weird to show off how the fit can hold a surf board. No one would do this, would they? It'll dirty all the fit's seats.

Roof racks are just plain ugly, unaerodynamic and advertise to the world what your carrying. Just throw some old sheets or towels down and use the magic seats like they were made to do.

I've carried a long roll of carpet / rug. Probably about 8' but definitely could fit something longer.

Most people that surf will try and put their board in the car they drive. I'm not concerned about the getting water in the interior. I'm more concerned about someone stealing the board when the car is parked. My main question is whether or not a longboard will fit into the car with the hatch closed. I know that an 8'4" board will fit into the Honda Fit. I'm curious if people have carried anything longer. A standard longboard is 9' long. This is pushing the maximum interior length of most cars.

An 8' 2x4 or similar barely fits between the back-left hatch corner and the right-front corner cup holder. I suspect that a 9' surfboard could barely be squeezed in, but would have not much clearance at all between the dashboard and the windshield. It would probably be best to take your (clean) board to the car dealer and try it out for yourself.
