A lot of cars don't have that flap...so don't worry...

Curious. My European Jazz has that flap. What purpose was it supposed to serve?

My European Jazz also have this little metal flap. But the hatch in front of the gas cap is locked when I lock the doors on my car. I understand that it is not a lock on this hatch in the USDM Fit?

That little flap is probably just a safety measurement to prevent some items to drop into the tank. I cant think of anything else. It is just held up with a little spring and you can push it easy with a finger. It may be also be a safety thing to prevent gas coming out of the tank when the gas cap is off? Cant see any rubber seals on it so it is not very good sealed when closed...

Correct me if I'm wrong but my older cars have a cover. But it was to prevent someone inserting a diesel nozzle that are made larger on purpose and would not fit in the open flap.

This is the 1st Honda I have had without the door-troublesome- could that have saved Honda any real money, relative to problems it can save by keeping junk from falling in your tank.

In the US the "flap" was originally designed to prevent using leaded gas in a catalyzed car (the leaded nozzles were bigger but could be still fill the tank without a flap). Since leaded gas is no longer available in the US the flap is no longer needed. My Xterra doesn't have a flap either.
