2007 FIT dashboard noise

I bought my FIT in September of 2006. On February 23, 2007 I finally got my car into the dealer because the entire dashboard was creaking and rattling and basically driving me crazy.

The dealer initially said they were able to duplicate the noise early in the morning but once the day warmed up ( I live in Connecticut) the noise went away. They called me and informed me that no action was taken and I could come pick up the car.

Well, I picked up the car and quicky drove it around the block so I could confirm the noise. I drove back to the dealer and had the service manager come out and drive around the block with me. He definitely heard the noise and apoligized for it not being properly fixed.

In a nutshell they spent two days tearing things down and here's the documented fix: "Mileage 19,237. Dash has multiple creaks and rattles @ base of windshield and aroun the lower "A" pillar trip area and around the instrument visor area. Contacted Honda tech-line. Tech-line had no info in database on this issue. Removed instrument visor and guages and road tested. Still hear several noises @ base of windshield area. Removed entire dashboard assy and found no EPT foam on underside of dash panel @ firewall area. Also found two vent ducts on t he drivers side that were conacting each other creating creak type noise. Installed a strip of EPT foam between ducts, installed EPT foam along the entire firewall area over sound deadening foam and also put EPT foam on underside of dash panel and insulated dash board locating pins as they were also a source of noise. Reinstalled dashboard assy, installed wool felt around instrument panel bezel and around instrument visor assy. Also applied wool felt to base of the "A" pillar trim panels. Roadtested again...dash area silent."

My dash made a ton of noise, especially when it was in the 20's outside. Since the fix it is silent and a joy to drive again. Just wanted to give folks a heads up in the event you are experiencing a similar problem.

Cheers,

Holmes

Is it in poor taste of me to say something? It is a CHEAP CAR. Granted, I have had mine for a few days and I love it. But I mean, heck, my $36K 06 Evo MR had rattles too. It was way more plush than the Fit, but there is plastic everywhere.

I was looking at it today, as I was laying down in my car for lunch...Yeah, 6' and 240 and I can LAY DOWN...Awesome! So I was just looking at the car. It is ALL plastic. I mean, I lift weights 5X a week and I scared to shut the door. Not that I am a beast, it just seems fragile. The car is what it is. Fun for WELL UNDER $20K. If this were a Lexus, I would spend my time at the dealer wanting things to be pristine. But it is a $15K toy that is fun to drive.

Please don't think I am being an ass, I am not. I am just trying to put it in perspective. If you were driving along and the K member fell off and you ran over the engine as it flew out from under your car, I could understand going to the dealer and having some words with them. But for a creak and a rattle, well, I would just assume go to McD's and wedge a french fry in there to stop the creaking rather than deal with these dealers in Miami.

Again, sorry to sound ass-ish! I am far from it. Just perspective...that's all. Let's all freak out when/if the paint starts coming off in sheets.

Kris

No sweat bro, I don't think you come across as an ass. However, my 2004 Civic was a cheap car too and it didn't rattle like my FIT did. I commute 130 miles a day to and from my office and I'll be damned if I'll be forced to deal with the noises I had. If the dealer couldn't fix it and I was unable to come up with a fix on my own, I would have looked to sell it on the private market and explore other options.

I dunno. read "gimmie's" link in this thread. He had some good ideas. I was thinking about some sort of sound dampner at least for the license plate as for RIGHT NOW...that is the only thing that rattles. I did order some goodies today so with lowering it, I am sure I will hear more stuff.

And BTW, my original post wasn't directed diliberately at you...it was just a general opinion on how I feel. I give my wife crap too about her complaining about her Expedition...It is an American made car!! It will have issues! But I have to bring her to reality more often than not!

Don't get rid of the car though!! I am having a blast!

I too have the same noise

I have the same exact thing going n in cold temps and it appears to be a sound of rubber or platic coated cables rubbing together during the cold weather. I however disagree witht he fit being a cheap car its fit and finish is top of the line and my 93 civic with 300000 miles on it dosent rattle and it cost 7200 dollars new. Due to the fact i have very little faith in the average american worker i have choosen to lvie with the sound during cold weather instead of risking some idiot screwing up the car good trying to fix it. I am sure at some point ill fix it myself but for now im choosing to live with it.

Can you do a step by step guide with pics? I'm sure it would be infinitely more valuable to the guys here...

Sorry no can do. The dealer did the fix and they did it the first go around. They removed the entire dash to fix my particular noise problems. EPT foam & wool felt pretty much on everything but now the interior is absolutely, dead quiet.
