Fuel Gauge Readings at certain distances
low mileage blues
driving in wintry NYC, I've never yet passed 120 miles at half tank (even when driving some highway). I've had the car for only 2 months and I am really, really hoping that MPG will pick up come spring.
Ouch to the NYC driving. You might want to slow it down a couple pegs and see what happens. My mileage has rebounded slightly on this tank. I made it to 359.2 before filling up (still no gas light), for a total of 39.56 MPG.
My assumption that passing the halfway mark 7 miles late were right, since it netted me about 20 more miles by the last 1/8th tank.

My first tank I was at 150 at half tank but it was also the dealer-filled tank. I dont know what they put in it. The light came on around 250.
Now on my second tank it hit 235 at half tank, but I also filled up the filler-tube when I filled the gas tank.
I guess that is the next question for everyone. What are they doing when they fill up? when it clicks off? Rounding to the next $ or filling up the filler tube. Makes a big difference.

What I've noticed so far, when resetting the trip odometer at every fillup.
Trip Odo:
0 Miles - Far right (max)
50 Miles - Needle crosses the slash for "F"
200 Miles - Needle crosses the slash for "half"
(200 is usually a good judge for how my driving has been. Last night I didnt cross the half slash til 207)
350-375 - Estimate 1/8
400 - Gas light (but I only let it get that far once)
The Fit fuel tank and gauge aren't linear of course, but it's just something I like to go by for estimation.
Any other observations?

Based on Shawn and what you have now offered, I can also say from Fit to Fit the non linearity is different.
The "just after fill up" over E till E line mark on mine can vary from 30 to as much 60.
That's big time dependent on pump shut off and what you do next with the pump in hand.
The 1/2 mark on mine on a 44mpg run is around 240 miles
E light is 420miles on a 44mpg tank
If you look at the miles from: (the diffence between)
F line to 1/2 line and
1/2 line to E line.
I thought they would all be the same on ever Fit based on MPG, but I guess that's what I'm saying...... it does not seem to be the same on all fits even with same MPG. That does not make any sense to me at all and I suspect some bogus readings are the WHY.
Guys (and gals) getting low mileage... remember, the biggest cause of this is
YOU
Get a ScanGauge and let it give you feedback about your driving habits. The WAY you drive the car is more important than tire pressure or other tweaks.

Usually around 160 to 170 when I hit the half way point....so far its been pretty consistant. My needle usually takes about 70miles b4 it moves off F. Then travels pretty quick towards the half mark...116miles then slows to a crawl 160 to 170 half point....once I hit 190 at the half...weather was perfect for that tank load and drove conservatively...love this car!
Rich, when you fill up do you stop at the first click?
I do and I ask because Paul does not and he stops at the 2nd click.
I know Paul does this consistently as I stop at the 1st click consistently.
Now, if you consistently stop at the first click then it would prove my theory that Paul is merely wasting gas on that 2nd click. I say this because you and I have achieved 50mpg tanks and you seem to agree with my findings of correlating mileage and mpg at the half tank mark.
I have read that the 2nd auto stop of a gas pump is just wasting fuel due to the vapors escaping through the charcoal canister, thus I never fill past the first auto stop(or first click). I also, think paul should be getting better mpg at the mileage he is reporting according to my findings.

I fill up to the first click, then advance to the nearest $0.25 increment usually. When it's quiet you can hear the gas start coming up the filler neck. If there is any slope at the gas station I will park with the nose lower than the rear.
I'm usually at around 60 miles before the fuel gauge even moves from "full" and around 240 miles for half way point. I put in two extra "clicks" after the first autostop - one fast one and another slow one. I've averaged right around 41mpg for the last three tanks. Also, around 395 miles until the light comes on and around 415 until I fill it up.

I'm not even close to the vent line back to the EPA vent canister.
I have zero gas in the neck when I pull away from the pump. You have to really pack it in (like some do) to run that danger. The gas that would go into the canister would be slight in any case. like a cup.
My eco is darn good IMHO. I think a great deal of it is the route we all take. More so than the techniques, less the basic ones. I practice most of the techs that have proven pos results.
You can't reliable predict tank mpg based on 1/2 tank or E light miles driven.
When I fill up I'll record the 1st auto off gal and than the gals to the next auto off at med speed. It's not many.
On this fill if I stop at the 1st of course it will be great because that would result in a gal that does not reflect what I used on this tank. That's why I like the average like on cleanmpg. It will all work out over many tanks no matter how you pump it.
PS I have seen
between 40 and 85 miles at the F line
between 215 and 270 at the 1/2 line
What speed do you run the pump at. Hi med or low?

I can't tell anymore. Last time I got 60 miles before the meter hit the top line. This time, it only hit 40 miles before hitting the top line. Uhhh... I give up. I going to buy scan gauge for future mod now, this gas meter is driving me nuts.
