I am waiting for Honda, or someone else, to sell a plug-in hybrid. The current hybrid offerings either can't go over 35 mph without starting the engine, or the electric motor only aids the gasoline engine to improve gas milage.
I want an electric car that can go 60 miles on an overnight charge from the AC outlet in my garage and carry four people with luggage. It would have a small gasoline or diesel engine that would act as an auxiliary power unit to charge the batteries if I need to drive more than the 60 miles between AC charges. Is something like this in the works?

Hopefully we will have confirmation on it being an automatic/cvt/or manual before the 09's come out since I'm on a waiting list. Still up in the air on the hybrid or not, but if a manual hybrid is available I will be waiting it out a little longer.
your reasoning for this? honda has thought long and hard about it, and the fact of the matter is, cvt or auto equipped hybrids are usually the gas misers.
hell, even the regular civic in its automatic version is rated at higher mpg in the city and highway than its manual counterpart.
I am becoming very curious about how Honda may handle the battery pack in the Fit Hybrid and the magic seats. With the way the floorpan is right now, the Fit would not have the space to shove in the battery pack. I would assume, then, that the floor would have to be raised in order to accommodate the battery pack, but then what would happen to the magic seats, e.g., the tall mode and even the full flat mode? A lot of cabin/luggage height would be compromised if the floor had to be raised. So I am getting curious as to how Honda may handle this issue....
they may eliminate the magic seat stuff alltogether. Hybrids usually have compromises...the civic hybrid cant have its seats folded down, whereas the prius can because its a hatch. (but it drives like ass.)
according to honda, even the current civic hybrid can go into ev only mode, but because of the way their hybrid powertrain works, even the latest version may not incorporate it to the same extent that toyota has.
on the flipside though, honda is taking a nice approach in not charging an arm and a leg like toyota has done, and they actually will put some thought in making the car drive nicely, unlike prius. (a 'tuned' suspension is an option on the prius, i though it was hilarious.)
