I finally met my neighbor with AT fit

She lives like 5 houses away. I had been wondering who owned that new purple fit. This is the first time I met her. Anyway she complained her mileage is only 27 while mine is 35 with the MT.

I should've given her the link to this site. I just told her AT tends to get less mileage (she got less mileage than her old tercel. her old tercel also was more powerful). I also asked how much she drives, and she says 80% city. I added my old AT civic got 27, and the fit's faster with more safety features, so it's still impressive.

She's been toying with the S mode, to experiment with the mileage. My advice to her (which I hope works for her) is feather the gas pedal. I told her to drive in D. If she demands more speed, hit the left shift paddle, not gun it. Same with climbing mountains.

I am kinda angry why honda didn't prioritize mileage on the AT more. A lot of people like that the AT is more preppy for traffic. the AT also has good acceleration compared to most cars with a 1.5 L. It also has a locking torque converter for all 5 gears. Despite all these goodies, I rather honda sacrifice all for the sake of higher mileage.

I'm still scared to talk to my neighbor who has a BOM Fit. We call him Batman because the original owner of the house (guy with the Fit moved in recently) had his house painted really dark, never came out, and was shady as hell. I don't even know if he drives an automatic or a manual but he does have tint and works at Peppinos. :b

Anyway I do flower deliveries for my mom's shop and I don't regret not getting the manual anymore. :] I also get pretty damn good mileage if I ride on the freeway even a little, it's nice. 27 in city is pretty amazing though, she's good, she's good.~

P.S. IS SHE SEXY? :0

I think most of the problem is the driving habits. Before I tried any hypermiling techniques I was getting 35-38 mpg. My last tank was 45mpg. I have an 07 AT fit, so I know better economy can be had.

my best city was 30 mpg and that is pretty thick city driving. My best highway was 41mpg that was smooth sailing the whole way on the highway.

Yea. But I still wish the AT AI forces good driving behavior. Most people buy the fit for mileage anyway. I think very few people would have complained if the fit was slow.

There's also quite a difference in terrain. The OP and his neighbor live in San Francisco = lots of hills. If you're making the long climb up Clipper from Noe Valley to Diamond Heights, you're not going to get good mileage in anything except a pair of sneakers. On the plus side you have lots of opportunities to coast!

I've been to St. Pete. It's flat!

The Fit was rushed to the US market using the existing world market Fit.
The AT Fit is a US addition to the Fit line which was designed as a world market car where AT is unwanted. So the 1500 Fit is a bit handicapped in 'D'. You can get better mpg in 'S' by shifting yourself; that prevents much of the excessive automatic shifting in 'D' that uses more gas. The best Fit for the US would have been to use the Civic HX 1700 cc vtec that got over 40 mpg EPA and way outperforms the Fit 1500. The rumor is Honda is toying with an offset V-4 similar to VW's 6 (shorter length engine) so the 1700 will fit in the fit's engine bay.
The Fit is too heavy to be really successfully automatic'ed with a 1500 cc engine; the engine has to work too hard.

Op also said he is getting 35mpg, therefore no reason for the neighbor to get much less than that. Unless she only goes uphill both out and back. St Pete/Tampa is flat thats why I achieve 45mpg but if the OP gets 35 with MT Id bet i can get at least 33 with AT.

For a 100ish hp car with an automatic, I have to admit that it shifts extremely well.

Many of the auto econo box's I've been in before have been HORRID! Always looking for a gear...ErrrrUUUUUHHHHH huuuuuuuu ErrrrrUUUUUUHHHH huuuuu....Not in the Fit. I live at 7200' elevation and the tranny shift points are awesome.

And I can dip my chicken nuggets while driving and not drop them! LOL
