Defrost

This may be a stupid question and I think I know the answer but I want clarification:

When using defrost to defog the windshield is the A/C used?

I have the temperature setting on the coldest and the vent set to fresh air and the directional dial set to the defrost setting(so it comes out of the dash an hits the windshield). Also, I make sure the A/C button is not pushed in and the green light is NOT on. I have to use this every morning or the windshield will fog up and I would not be able to see. I notice lately that the air coming from the defrost setting is cool in the morning, so much that it will condense the moisture on the outside of the windshield.

I want to know if I am waisting fuel by using defrost and figure out if there is another way to defog the windshield.

Yes, unless you have performed the AC defrost mod, you will be running the compressor if the dial is in the "windshield" or the "feet and windshield" setting.

Damn sneaky HONDA! I have been using defrost every morning so I can see.

What is this A/C DEFROST mod you speak of? Is it worth while, free and easy?

It's not just Honda. Most if not all cars made today do this. Nissan even takes it further in that if you turn the defrost on, the compressor will run until the car is turned off even if you change the HVAC switch position. Hers the 411 on this worthwhile, free, and easy mod.

I have not yet performed it on my Fit, but essentially if you take apart the dash below the climate control knobs, there is a small harness plugged into the air flow direction selector. Just unplug that harness and it will not auto-activate the AC. If you do need it you can still press the AC button.

Edit: I have been treed.

Since I had to search for it I mine as well post it for others too:

I accidently stubbled on the cause of the AC automatically starting with either defroster modes. There's a toggle switch connected to a yellow and black wire behind the selector mode. Remove the cover under the ventilation controls and unplg that switch and you are done!

You don't have to remove the unit to unplug it.
Also:
Now if I want the AC on, I push the AC button. Works in any mode, manually.

Question:

I'd like to try this out but want to ask a couple of questions before I start tearing into it. a) In your posted photo above, can I assume that we are looking at the BOTTOM of the HVAC controls? b) Did you disconnect BOTH the yellow AND black connectors (theoretically only one should be needed)? c) It looks (from the photo) that the black wire is going to some kind of double connector -- any guess at what this is for?

Answer:

Yes, that is the bottom of the HVAC controls. I had the radio out while attempting the steering mounted radio controls, and I noticed the toggle switch. Both wires are in one connector that's offset and has provisions for a 3rd wire. So both wires are disconnected from my HVAC unit.

If you follow the instructions in this PDF, you'll figure it out.

I hope it is as easy as it sounds!

Just did the defrost/AC mod for my 2009. LIfted off the rectangular panel right above the power outlet. The clips are on the bottom of this - so wedge it out from the bottom and tilt it out and up. Then you can barely see the switch plug on the driver side (openings are small through the plastic dash structure). I used a needle nose to pull the plug (can't get fingers in there).. I think I could get it back on if needed with needle nose pliers again.
