New Car Gas Mileage

New Car Gas Mileage

Did your miles/gallon improve after a few thousand miles? I'm seeing people with 50+ miles per gallon and i'm wondering if this could be a possibility.

Currently I have 600 some odd miles on my car, and I'm hoping that it will improve soon.

Terrain matters. People who get 350-400, 500 miles a tank live in really flat areas. Ride a bicycle and u'll feel how much harder hills are for endurance. The same is for cars and mileage.

But for your first statment, yes the car's mileage will go up as the engine breaks in, and you have your oil change. What s your mileage

Not to be contrary, but I live at 7200' elevation and my commute takes me over 1500' vertical one way in my AT5 Fit.

Honestly the WHOLE shebang is IMHO related to speed and acceleration. Easy on take-off, easy on MPH. Try going 50-55 highway for a week guys and report back on your mileage. I'll betcha' lunch you're gonna' be in the forties.

My first tank was 42.9 (nobody on this forum belived me)...Second 41.3, third 46.3 and I'm on target for 40.XXX this tank (1/2 A/C usage this go around and teaching my daughter how to drive...She's 9! ). So while I believe the car will loosen up in the next few K miles, I haven't had a problem with 40's.

Mine has about 8K and I believe it's getting better mileage but by the same token my driving style has been evolving as well. Technique is the most important but there are many other factors (terrain, AC, tires etc.) that can affect MPGs. The Fit is a tool. Learn to use it. Sorry but no easy answers.

Oh.

Thanks for the responses. I do get around 34-36 mpg, but I guess I am getting greedy hearing all these 40+ mpg stories. Hopefully, better mileage will come with engine break in/oil change. BTW, when was your guys' first oil change at?

Most, if not all, of the guy's here that are in the 40's + range have one thing in common. A nice loooong commute were general hypermiling techniques can be implemented.

If you are in this camp, and you can drive 55mph w/o getting shot at, then you too will be in the 500+ mile tank club. It's really not that hard if you don't mind sweating w/o A/C and can be disciplined enough to drive slower than your grandma'.

Question. So as my car gets older it will change the gas milegae? I keep my car turned up, get oil changes as needed, keep my tires at the right pressure. I am driving a 1999 Ford Contour. I am planning on getting a new car soon.

My mileage did not change any from my initial fill up to my current mileage.
First tank MPG: 36.44.
Last tank MPG: 36.97.
Overall average: 36.90. (after 12,238 miles).

Lowest mileage: 29.19
Highest mileage: 43.98

In short, I have not noticed any difference in my mileage as time has passed, but I am not complaining

my gas mileage went from ~33mpg to 45+mpg when i learned how to drive efficiently.

Mine is pretty much the same and driving at 65-66mph on 25 psi which i just added air. And running the a/c all the time.

ive been improving 2 mpg per tank... i just toppes 1200 miles... getting 38.8 mixed city with ac on ..5spd bbp

i noticed an increase in FE as i put more miles on the car. i was getting about 30 mpg until i hit about 12000 miles, then it started going up. now i get about 40 under normal driving conditions, and 50+ mpg when i actively try to drive more intellegently.

get a life

Just don't drive like a crazy person,enjoy the world as it goes by instead of obsessing about your gas guage,you'll get 38-40mpg.People might think your normal,you may even get a date.
