Auto transmission shifting 1st to 3rd?

Seems sometimes under light throttle that the tranny will go from 1st to 3rd and then quickly back to 2nd. It's annoying. 30k on the car, does it randomly.

If you let up on the throttle in first gear and the vehicle speed is above a certain level, the ECU will put the trans in third, then you apply just a little throttle and the ECU will then allow the trans to go into 2nd gear. For a test, apply a steady throttle and you will achive a 1 2 3 4 5 shift pattern....

Sounds more like user error like n6nev was hinting. Perhaps you are releasing so much throttle that the car understands you to want it in a higher gear so it just bypasses second.

Not at all, foot is down on the gas with constant pressure..why would I let off between shifts? Just wondering if anyone experiences this. Not really a big deal.

Yeah you take it to the dealer and get the typical no problem found.

I'll live with it, as it doesn't do it all the time.

My '03 Honda Pilot started off with mild transmission shift glitches, and within three months the transmission was shot (with the associated flashing "D"). Some transmission problems behave like computer viruses, seemingly innocuous at first, and then......

Taking it to the dealer has documentation value. Maybe they'll say "No Trouble Found", but if you have a trans failure a year later and ask Honda for goodwill consideration, you're more apt to get it with a documented history.

On the '03 Pilot, Honda took nearly a month to come back and say they'd cover the rebuilt trans ($2,300), and I'd pay $630 labor. I took them up on the offer and then tranded toward an '09 Fit.

I have a 2013 base model that just started shifting very hard. It only has 1st & 3rd no 2nd 4th or 5th. The "D" light is flashing, I added most of a qt of Dextron VI but no change. And the D is still flashing.

Did you add a quart of ATF because it was a quart low? If so, how long were you running it without the proper amount of ATF? Obviously, running a transmission without the proper amount of ATF will lead to problems and damage, as suggested by your flashing "D."

It's probably time to visit a transmission shop.

Is Dexron a Honda approved fluid for that car?
